Back when I used to discuss anime in the unholy realms of usenet, Marmalade Boy was always referenced. I never saw any of the fansubs or anything though, but since someone told me the entire manga is available I went ahead and bought it all. Its not a bad story or anything and some parts are tender and all, but overall I am not too impressed. When folks on usenet talked about the anime they always wrote about how complicated the web of relationships was, but the manga is not all THAT messy. The sidenotes in the manga however note that the anime is a bit different and has some additional relationships in it. Is the anime alot better than the manga? Is it like, sadder and stuff?

The anime is a lot more complicated because a lot more happens. They animate an entire new section where Yuu goes to America and meets a whole slew of American kids. Most people think it gets pretty stupid (it does), and the ending is totally different from the manga.

I believe that the anime side stories were actually done by the author. That's what I read in the free-talks in book 8. I really get the impression that she did not enjoy having to work the anime and manga at the same time.

She did the character designs, not the story... All in all, it wasn't a bad story, it was just too damn long. Though I normally perfer the manga in most situations I did like the anime better witht his one. There are just some ways you can be expressive when it's animated that just doesn't come across in manga. Panning shots which add the emotion and gives you more impact is just one example. The BGM (back ground music) for most of the series is also better than most of the series out there.

Story wise? I enjoyed both, but MB is your true teenage soap opera. And I've known enough teenagers out there to know that the characters here thought and acted just like most teenagers do. They ARE that angsty, insecure, foolish, etc.

So the story in the anime is about the same then? Its not any better or any more complex? And it isn't the way the characters acted that annoyed me, its the ending, its a bit too tidy for me. I'm not going to get into what may or may not be an accurate portrayal of the teenage mindset here. The answer seems to differ with age due to the drastically different ways people view the world and life both in their teens and as adults. I remember I used to enjoy watching 90210 but now I grow more and more ashamed as I witness the youth of today praise "The OC" as true to life and claim that the upcoming film "Thirteen" is accurate.

I haven't seen the anime, and I'm still waiting for the backordered mangas (by TokyoPop) to come in... Thus, I have only read book 1. <sighs> Overall, this gives me the feeling of Party of Five since it was the ONLY soap opera that I cared anything for.

He he... I haven't watched television much in the last seven years or so, since junior in high school. Things might have changed since then, but the turbulent life of a teenager will always be true.

Then you may very well enjoy the anime more... it's not so... tidy. There is more time spent developing characters, and much more does go on. As far as perceptions go? I watched MB very recently and enjoyed it thoroghly... I'm in my late twenties, and yes, when I was in my early to mid teen years, I watched a bit of 90210. As a teenager, I kinda liked it. Eventually it grew old, and didn't move anywhere. Now, I wouldn't care to watch it, even if I was paid to do so...

To point out some of the problems with that show, the list goes something like this:

overly melodramatic at times
tried to take itself too seriously, and expected you to take it seriously
little to no character development
concept got old very quick
acting and writing got worse after the first couple of years
etc.

Point is that you can enjoy MB for what it is, feel the sense of realism and drama but realize there is more to it than that. So as an adult, you can find plenty to enjoy here without feeling embarassed for liking a show like this one. In the end, I don't think you will lose for picking up the MB anime. While the ending isn't entirely different than the manga, the complexities and things that go on to get there are definetly different. Oh, and I gotta say... Miwa is the man. ^_^
