The publishing trends are troubling. I am no fan of commercial publishing, but at least they were understood outside anime/manga circles as a mark of quality.
You could take a book of random fan musings and as long as a publisher stamped it, you could get it into Wikipedia so the articles weren't just worthless recitations of dates and sales figures.
But now? Where are the 'respectable' interpretations and commentaries going to come from? Mechademia? Even if it weren't full of the usual academic literary masturbation (yes, I've read them, up to #5), it's only one annual volume - that wouldn't keep up with existing levels of industry output. And Wikipedia's Powers that Be would rather it die than change the existing content policies*.
All in all, troubling trends.
