anyone know more details behind this? all the news sites seem to be in Japanese, but apparently some kid dismembered his mother. i have to admit i'm sort of not surprised something like this would come up eventually. i just started it today, and it's one of the most disturbing manga i've ever read. makes Ichi The Killer look like Hello Kitty. |

The bold text is MPD Psycho. Go find out what the underlined name is yourself, and you'll know this is just another "this-and-that made my boy a bad bad person." |

I wasn't aware Japan was ever above human nature. |

The article does mention the kid going onto cha t rooms asking if MPD Psycho was real... if he wasn't able to figure that out on his own, I'm wondering if he was already having those kinds of thoughts. It's likely. People tend to blame whatever they can.

Go back and read Ichi again. In terms of graphic content and relentless sadism nothing I've read tops that. Of course if you want emotionally disturbing content I would have to think about it for a while... As for the news, nothing new really. Like HitokiriShadow said, scapegoating is unfortunately a part of human nature. |

There were horror movies, a Marilyn Manson DVD (bless his soul in time), and books about murder. Like Kagemusha said, this looks like scapegoating, but did the article actually say anything about MPD Psycho actually being linked?

No, but the mere presence of the book is more than enough for scapegoat hunters. |

Pity that this stuff is targeted so easily like that. Luckily we have Aso on our side. |

I hate scapegoating. Just like with the whole," Did Cho emulate Oldboy?!?!?!111" it's just a load of crap. I haven't yet hired a hooker, and then beat her down with a bat because of Grand Theft Auto, and I haven't heard of many people who have.
Seriously, it's like the media searchs through all the entertainment someone who did something horrible, like the Columbine kids, and then if they find anything that a Amish would find slightly questionable in the eyes of God, they blame it for everything he did. |

Actually I believe that Manson was the inspiration for Lucy Monostone, but that's sorta digressing. It's so hard to tell what the link is between violent material and violent behavior is. I mean it's probably safe to say that there is a connection in some way, as in "well if they're predisposed to an interest in this kind of material that might mean they have a violent personality," but I agree that it's never enough to say that it "caused" the behavior. Heck I read MPD Psycho and I find it fascinating, but that doesn't mean I'd imitate the murders or anything. (As kind of an aside) Eji Otsuka has some interesting takes on otaku culture and what might, hypothetically, lead to the kind of behavior he depicted in MPD Psycho. I should really go and dig up his "atogaki" at the end of the Lucy Monostone book that I picked up... As for Ichi the Killer I'm almost in awe of Takashi Miike making both the Ichi the Killer movie and the MPD Psycho TV series. That takes guts.

Hey, at least you don't have to put up with British tabloids. Here's a well rounded arguement from England's bestselling (I think) newspaper:
I play many violent games, have been watching 18 certificate films for years and am in the process of rereading battle royale. My parents must be screwed...oh wait. I fail to see how reading/watching something violent transforms you from a normal person to a killer...perhaps there are other factors at work?... If I ever go on a killing spree (at least one person at my school thinks i might one day |

What I feel more disturbing is: while we might laugh at those scapegoat hunters at this murder case, I'm sure many of who have posted in this very thread would become one when there's a child molesting case.
To all child molester wannabe: before you "cross the line," please replace all your lolicon manga, anime and games with World Masterpiece Theaters. |
