Anime, in the commonly accepted usage in English, just refers to Japanese cartoons, whilst "cartoon" refers to cartoons in general.

Anime,in japanese context means animation.however in the eyes of anime fans throughout the world, anime refers purely to japanese cartoon.Anime is very much different from western animation or cartoon although they might shared the same source.Japanese dun see animation as purely 4 children as compared to their western counterpart.anime unlike cartoons, includes broader themes covering love & sex, war & death & so on.This is the main difference btw anime & cartoon Smile

The way I always thought about it was that anime is usually more mature, nor like hentai, mind you, but just has more mature themes. I mean, you're not going to find an episode of Ed, Edd, and Eddy that deals with social morals or pure adolescent romance.

To me, it has always seemed Anime was better.Laughing

Well, commonly, most anime is historically seeded in Japan, or contains japanese influences. Unlike a "cartoon" where a Fox will chase a roadrunner with TNT, anime is an artform. In japan, it is a substitute for movies; it's cheaper, and the Japanese view it as just as serious. It is another movie form. It usually expands to violence, sex, drugs, alcohol, sci-fi, fantasy, action, noir, there's an anime for everyone. Unlike cartoons in America, which are presumed to be suited more for younger children, anime is largely viewed by all ages. In addition, "anime" is another term for japanese animation. Cartoons were originated in America I believe, but draws, to this day, greatly upon other anime influences. Twisted Evil

yes anime is cartoons but most of it is aimed at a more mature audience like from 7-40+ years of age.

I dont see any cartoons on CN that is anywhere as mature as
you would see in some anime.

the only close to mature anime occurs on adult swim.

Now I have a question on the anime channel does it show mature themes being expressed a'lot.

but to get back to your question yes anime is cartoons but mostly for a mature audience.

Are you talking about ADV's Anime Network? Well, all of their shows are being shown UNCUT, like Evangelion and all.

Well, in Japan anime just refers to cartoons in general. So in Japan, Bugs Bunny is as much of an anime as Slayers is. There really isn't a difference between the terms. Cartoons are anime and anime are cartoons. It's really that quite simple.

Sure, there are big differences between American cartoons and Japanese cartoons, but it is still animated. Thus, it is still a cartoon. Nothing more, nothing less. I think it's kind of amusing when an anime fan says there aren't any American cartoons that are like anime. We do have some cartoons for mature audiences. For example, South Park comes to mind very quickly. It's hard to say that South Park is for kids. A lot of the American stuff on Adult Swim is more adult oriented as well. America seems to be breaking out of the stigma that cartoons are for kids.

On the other hand, there are a lot of anime for kids. Would these anime shows for kids be considered anime or cartoons in that case....just going by that definition? That's just the way I look at it anyway. I just like cartoons, that's all I know! ^^;

(On a side note, I know there is something annoying about calling anime just cartoons. I mean, they are just cartoons....but they're different. That's what makes anime so cool....and that's what makes American animation cool too. They're both cool in their own ways. That's just my opinion, and I probably said too much now. Word....)

In general, it seems that while there may be American animation directed toward adults, it still seems to find itself in the comedy realm, and often the only difference between "adult" cartoons and "kids" cartoons is that the "adult" cartoons use more explicit toilet humor, sexual references, vulgar language, etc.

The problem with this is that the supposedly UNCUT anime is not really uncut at all. When they are transfered to the US from Japan, they're edited, and I dont just mean the language.

I've seen original Japanese anime and the same anime as a US release, and they were quite a bit different.

Explain how they are different, then. Don't just make that claim without anything to back it up.

Shouldn't the topic's name be changed to "difference between anime and cartoon?".

Not true, a lot of parents in Japan see anime as being just for kids and and look down on the adult themes. For a recent example look up Gundam Seed. There was a seen showing two of the charaters getting out of bed together and the parents went nuts.

Love: pick a Disney classic
Sex: FAKK and FAKK2
War: Titan AE
Death: Atlantis

Again, watch some Disney classics, also keep in mind that not all anime use these themes either.

So you're saying that Pokemon is more artistic than a classic Loony Tunes cartoon? I don't buy that. I don't buy that.

We have cartoons in our theaters too you know?

See my quote above, it's a missunderstanding that all japanese see anime as being suitable for all ages. Besides, I see a lot of adults watching cartoons in american theaters too.

I don't think so. I'm not going to give you a big history lesson, but to say that we draw greatly apon anime for influence isn't true, I can only think of two cartoons that aren't anime but look like it, Totally Spies and Teen Titans. Only one of those is american and the other is french.

This is not completely true. Osama Tezuka was influenced heavily by early Disney cartoons.

Both the American and Japanese animation industries draw heavily upon each other.

Yes,parents look down & despise these adult themes but they cannot do anything about it.They complained about gundam seed but that does not bring down the popularity level of seed in japan, asia & rest of the world.juz look at the ratings of seed in japan.
Certainly there r animes aimed at chidren audience but japanese animators have also used anime 2 explore other broader & deeper theme which is not suitable 4 chidren & juvenile audience. Can u find any extreme hentai or war close 2 reality in cartoon. The war & death themes in Titan AE & Atlantis are cartoons with an eye toward younger audience but of course anyone can watch these movies. As 4 anime, titles such as blue gender, vampire hunter D series & various hentai series are definitely not 4 children.Try comparing Titan AE & Atlantis to evangelion, blue gender...do u see any difference Question
