I just finished the second volume of Ergo Proxy, and I was confused by Re-l's shock over there being people outside the dome. She had already told Vincent to get rid of his necklace because it smelled of Mosk [however it is spelled, another domed city] plus where are all these immigrants coming from that want to become fellow citizens?
I'm just confused ;-;

I think the shock may be from people not living in a city type environment at all. They're just in the rugged outskirts and not in a dome/city. It has been a good bit since I've seen Ergo Proxy however.

Not to mention that the outside air is supposed to be poisonous. I don't think she expected normal, non-mutated humans to be living right outside the city.

Also you said you are only on the second volume, so I will answer your last question with a question. You already know that there are/were two cities, why can there not be more than two?

Re-l was angry at her grandfather for not telling her that people lived on the out side, it seems she should have already noticed this. It was rather obvious. I don't understand why this seemed so surprising to her. The air out side does appear to be poisonous as Re-l gets sick when she takes off her mask.

It's called Culture Shock. Think of it, like what a spoiled rich girl who's never left the house would think and feel when she sees utter poverty for the first time kind of reaction because that's the type of society Rondo is. All aspects of life are controled and she finds it hard to imagine any other way of life where things aren't immediately accessable and provided for you and people are free to do and think what they want. She knew there were imigrants but kind of assumed since the air was poisionous they all come from domes like Rondo. It didn't occur to her that there were essentially the equilivant of homeless hobos out there and it shocked her and made her angry that she'd been told half truths her whole life.

I don't think it's nearly that complicated. They talk of other domed cities so obviously there are other controlled environments people travel to/from. These people were not living in one of those environments though, they were just living out in the supposedly toxic environment.

Don't worry, mai21, I was having the same issue as you. It seemed unfathomable that she didn't know that it was possible for people to live outside, particularly given the knowledge and position of her grandfather. I just finished watching DVD 2 myself, so I've been going back and forth on the reasoning as well.

She is shocked because thats the first time she's actually been outside of the city. Essentially she has never set foot outside the city, which is believed to contain microbes that are dangerous, etc, so she's just experiencing what she's never imagined before (mainly that stuff actually exists in the "wild"). She knows that there are other cities but has never been to them.

On the poverty note: there is poverty in the city itself and its obvious she isn't shocked because of that (such as her in the immigrant quarters) in the outside world.

It seems like she was surprised that people could live on thier own with out being controlled. Being monitored and controlled is what holds Romdo together, so she wonders if that is no longer necessary.
