For a while I've been fascinated by Mohiro Kitoh, the author of such works as:
* Vandemiēru No Tsubasa (Wings Of Vendemiaire) * Shadow Star Narutaru * Bokurano * SiNNa 1905 * Kitō Mohiro Tanpenshū - Zansho (Mohiro Kitoh's Short Stories - Zansho) * Kakutoshi No Yume (Hallucination From the Womb) I have read bits and pieces of what I could find online only found information on the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th titles. So far, each one as some point in time involved a "child" or whatever age group Shina and the Bokurano kids are, in a complex situation that is risque, disturbing, and makes you wonder of Kitoh is a pedophile. By overlooking overlooking that quality, his stories are very unique and interesting and above all, one of a kind. Still, that reoccurring theme of kids in suggestive situations really butts in after that story is over and haunts you. Do you feel his work requires these situations or could be done without? If anyone bought the Narutaru manga and saw the scanlation before, they would notice the heavy editing; so why the dark literature? What are you opinions of him, his work, and his drive to create things like this? |

As I have mentioned several times before, its translated Chinese title is so fluffy and shōjo-styled, making it escaped from hawk eyes of moral groups. As far as I know my set was not edited.
Why not? Most of his main characters are near or around the age of puberty, the red line of children and adults. Those characters often have to face and/or forced to choose between ideologies and (often unethical) realities. That alone can create many dramatic stories. He and his former Afternoon colleague Riichi Ueshiba are my favorite sci-fi and supernatural mangaka, respectively. And I'm damn sure they are both lolicons (in a good way though). |

Wings of Vendemiaire is a selection of short stories that are loosely or directly connected. At the centre are living wooden (?) dolls with wings, but to be quite honest, it has been years since I've read it, and I don't actually remember much.
It had the first brief instance of necrophilia I ever saw in a manga. I can't make statements about Kitoh, the person. But asking why he does disturbing and shocking stories would be like asking why Stephen King writes horror. |

Kitoh is one of my two favourite manga-ka right now (the other being Nobuyuki Fukumoto). I've imported all of the tankobon for Bokurano, as well as the four volumes of alternative and the official book, and his two short story collections Zansho and Tales from the Womb. I was importing Narutaru as well since they reprinted it last December but I only got to volume 3 before Amazon ran out of stock on a number of volumes. I'm also eagerly awaiting the release of the first volume of his new work Owari to Hajimari no Miles which is running in Erotics Fx (which I believe is where Tales from the Womb was serialized).
His stories have an interesting edge to them that I just don't seem to find elsewhere. I was especially fond of his short story Pochi no Basho which can be found in Zansho. A song for Papa which can be found in the same volume was also good. The constant presence of child sex in almost everything he does leaves me with little doubt he's a pedo but as long as he keeps his hands off real kids his work is good enough that I can forgive him for it. Though I found it was a little too emphasized in Tales from the Womb. (Let's just say I'm glad the customs officers were to lazy to check the contents of that package or I'd probably never have gotten it.) It's a pity given the quality of his work that he can't seem to get a solid anime adaptation of anything he does. They either end prematurely or have stupid divergences that make little sense. I haven't gotten the chance to read SiNNa 1905 yet. Does anyone know if it's any good? Also, can anyone reccomend places other than Amazon JP to import his stuff from that'll ship to Canada? I'm primarily looking to aquire copies of Wings of Vendemiaire and Narutaru 4-12. |

I have to agree with that. None of his work gets a solid show. Maybe the animators half way realize the disturbing things they would have to animate (especially Norio Koga's eventual death, it's really sick). Still, I would have liked to seen some things in the original format like Bokurano. And Oronae, good luck trying to find copies of his work. I've been trying hard as well to get his literature and it's murder getting a solid connection. |
