Like steam boat whistles in Le Chevalier D'eon. The first steam powered seafaring vessel wasn't launched until Robert Fulton's The Clermont in 1807. so to hear not one, but several steam ship whistles in the harbour scenes of 1760's England where nothing, but wooden square riggers are in shot, was very wrong indeed.

Well spotted. Of course, Le Chevalier d'Eon is chock-full of anachronisms, historical errors, etc. -- I have already noted a number of them in the trivia page for d'Eon's Encyclopedia entry. You should add the steam whistles, by all means.
There's a long tradition in historical storytelling of anachronism -- even Shakespeare did it (in Act 2 of Julius Caesar, for instance, a clock strikes the hour, and Caesar is described as wearing doublet and hose instead of the Roman toga). - abunai |

It's interesting how selective our willing suspension of disbelief can be. It's the incorrect era for the steam boats that bothers you in this series, but the premise of someone being possessed by a ghost is no problem since it's consistent with the story. I am the same way with things, though of course I am having a hard time coming up with a specific example at the moment. I guess it's a sign of really good story telling that we are easily able to believe things that would otherwise be beyond our ability to accept, not just in anime but in any entertainment medium. There will always be cases where even in the midst of a well told yet clearly fictional story certain things will trigger a sense of inconsistency. It just depends on your own experiences and background I suppose. |

I can accept the paranormal in a ghost story but when the plot is heavy with historic fact, all be it a bit twisted to make the story work, and time scale, I have to draw a line to something as blatantly wrong as that. |

Ugh... don't get me started. If anyone's been reading the DC Comics series Countdown, you're probably aware of what DC decided to name "The Morticoccus Virus." I'm unable to read through an issue anymore without getting all worked up over the fact that "coccus" indicates a specific BACTERIUM morphology. It has absolutely nothing to do with viruses! It was literally the very first thing I learned on my very first day in Microbiology. Open a book, people! Buuttt.... I have no problem with Superman flyin' around shootin' lasers out of his eyes or people travelling back in time. Sorry it wasn't an anime example, but it's something I really needed to get out of my system (Also, let's assume that they meant to say "Morticoccus Bacteria" The organism shown in the comic is clearly rod-shaped, which isn't even a coccus, but a bacillus! Cocci are spherical! Argh. Ok, I'm sorry. I'm done now. Double-fail for DC Comics in the microbiology department.) |

Please don't remind me the fact that spoiler[Baseball and Hip-Hop] manages to appear in Samurai Champloo. I don't care if it was produced by the same guy that did Cowboy Bebop, IT'S A FREAKING TIME PARADOX!! |

...I do believe you've missed the entire point of Samurai Champloo. Congrats. |

As well as historical correctness, I've noticed other errors when anime is set in real-world locations.
Being a supernatural series I shouldn't pay so much attention to detail, but I was trying not to laugh during episode 7 of Hellsing. I found the inaccuracies regarding London Underground routes and rolling stock somewhat quaint. (A train diverting at Notting Hill? Automatic emergency doors?) They didn't detract from my enjoyment of the series however- that was the job of the dubbing. |

I seem to remember a scene in Steamboy in which an honour guard fires a salute into the air inside the glass palace but somehow manage to avoid lacerating the assembled masses with falling panes of glass...

Its not that it is a wierd sound but in rurouni kenshin the tinks of the swords hitting didn't match the actual sword hitting. So even though it was an awesome series it sounded weird at those parts.

It think that this post is very much in tune with this topic and your post. Plus, personally I found it hilarious. |

There will always be inaccuracies in anything. Especially in anime. You've just gotta learn to get over em. If you can't then anime really probably isn't the thing for you.

No I didn't. Okay, the spoiler[Field full of Weed and the Eating contests with the color commentary] made it look plausible. The spoiler[Rap] was passable. spoiler[Baseball] was just plain pushing it. |

I have to admit that I don't catch many anachronisms or historical errors at all in period pieces unless it's blatantly obvious (like hip hop in Samurai Champloo) and those that are obvious are usually made purposely, but I guess that's what the trivia on the show's ANN encyclopedia page is for.
It's also interesting to note the many anachronisms that occur in futuristic sci-fi shows and movies. One that comes to mind is the spoiler[Columbia shuttle] in episode 19 of Cowboy Bebop, which wasn't supposed to be an anachronism until spoiler[the shuttle disaster in 2003]. |
