I thought it seemed less crowded today compared to yesterday (though I blame part of that on being Day 2, thus less people running for West hall.) Despite the threat of rain though, it was actually quite pleasant today! No rain by the time my friend and I got to Big Sight around 9, and it was pretty cool while we waited outside. The sun was out by noon which made for great cosplay pictures!

This is why it will be quite a long time until I finally (if ever) attend Comiket. Anime Expo's crowd control issues are minute compared to this, even though a lot of Comiket takes place outside.

There's a huge difference between AX crowd control and Comiket crowd control. The staff at Comiket have perfected shepherding people around. When I got to Big Sight yesterday, staff helped guide people to the waiting area behind Big Sight (even controlling crowds at intersections to make sure no one got caught in the street when the lines changed!), and everyone lined up in an orderly fashion. After they had filled up a section, they had us sit down to make sure everyone had enough room. Toilets were available back there for anyone to leave the line and go take care of things. Everyone was quiet and considerate, and staff continued to go down the line announcing what was going on, and making sure that anyone who wasn't feeling well was taken care of. (Even announcements in Big Sight throughout the day reminded people to take breaks and get some food and drink!) When we were finally allowed in, there were a few staff members cheering for us, and they easily directed people to where you needed to go. For the second day, they had a separate line before we even got to Big Sight for those going to the Industry booths in West Hall. For East, they clearly directed those going to the main East halls and those going to the Annex.

Crowd control within Big Sight is a little messier, but still leagues beyond AX. Staff were on hand near the largest circles, and very organized lines for those. Those that were forced to wait outside for a large circle had a staff person on hand at the break in the line, clearly leading people inside. The aisles between smaller circles were another story, but even then, Japanese guests are very considerate and even though it can be a bit chaotic, you never feel hassled. The event has also gotten used to having so many foreign guests, and has international information booths set up. (They even made announcements on both days I was there to please guide lost foreign guests to those booths where they had a few translators on staff.)

Honestly if you ever get a chance to attend, don't take AX as an example of how bad big crowds can be. Comiket is very good at handling the crowds. And if it's a big worry, showing up in the afternoon allows free entry inside and less lines.
