Thanks for taking my question on anthologies. Kind of figured the idea would get shot down, but FWIW, I've been picking up Japanese anthologies whenever I'm at a Kinokuniya--Dengeki Daioh, Dengeki G's Comic, and Monthly Comic Alive--and it's been fun to get a years-advance look at titles that take off and either get adapted as anime (Eromanga Sensei, Mitsuboshi Colors), or licensed in English (Bloom Into You, Not Lives). It's a good way to discover new stuff. (EDIT: forgot to mention, I discovered last week a bunch of the anthologies are also on iBooks Japan now, so that's an easier way to get them)
The Crunchyroll Manga app is kind of like an anthology, but it's really more like a dumping ground… it's hard to find new things you'd like. At a bare minimum, it would benefit from being curated into genres (shonen / shojo / seinen / josei / etc, or sports / action / mystery / romance / etc). It'd be better still if there were an editor assigned to maintain a "what's new" landing page to summarize which titles have new chapters, what they're about, why you might want to check them out, etc. Make it more of a regular destination for readers. Nice to hear things are going well with Diamond I can remember complaining back when Blood Alone was being put out complaining that it didn't get mentioned in the weekly release post on a blog. Than being told by the blogger that Diamond didn't list Seven Seas titles along with being told that "I bought everything Seven Seas put out" by that blogger.
Now Seven Seas has a distribution deal how time changes things. Also glad to hear design uniformity is appreciated as well. Hopefully Classic Collections sell well I even pre-orderd the Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection vols. 1 & 2 and Space Battleship Yamato: The Classic Collection and I'm not even a big Leiji Matsumoto fan. Just to support the idea of older titles being released. |

Great interview with some cool ladies. You can bet your ass I'm over the moon with these classics; I'm bouncing off the walls excited and will be buying them. Perfect Blue is out in just a few days and I'm jumping right on top of that. Now we just need the movie back out...
So hats off to Seven Seas. Great time to be getting into stuff like this. Listen to them and go buy this stuff to support it and make sure more will be coming out. |

I'm still not entirely sure where Seven Seas draws the line for horniness/splitting off into Ghost Ship, considering they publish Monster Musume as Older Teen without shrinkwrap.

That podcast was fantastic and very informative.
I'm really surprised to learn Seven Seas had no clue about Devilman (or any other manga) getting an Anime. To be honest, I thought that was the only reason they even bought it. The second I saw the trailer, my thoughts went "now I get it, Seven Seas!" ... but no. I really want the classics to do well. After Vertical kinda dropped them, and DMP being the nightmare that they are, I had thought that was the end for classic manga in English. There are so many titles I'd like to own. While I love Devilman to death (I waited 15+ years for a release, as I can't actually read my French edition) I'm more of a 'year 24 group' kind of reader. Hope 'Claudine' does well. One thing I wonder about, though. Most if not all manga with an anime release get puplished earlier in the states than they are puplished in my native language (German). By the time we get our own license reveal, my US copies already arrived, and I just stick with that. Our own publishers always say they're not as "flexible" about release schedules and that they need "a year or so" in advance for any new series. But that's the same thing Seven Seas just said. I guess you're just way better at picking titles? |

There's not much I want more right now than for the classic line to be a success. I have a billion old titles I'm desperate to read, and I figure that if this is a failure for Seven Seas, that's it for classic manga in English.

Around 01:07:07, Zac added "The Wizard of Oz" is public domain. To my knowledge, no ANNCast episode has ever mentioned that term prior to this episode.

I wonder if there would be a market for the [/b]Boogiepop novels, now that the distribution channels are set up and the market for light novels established. I enjoyed them and would love to see more.

This was a really interesting podcast.
I hope the printings of Devilman and Harlock sell well enough that they'll consider picking up more classic manga titles. Like they said, there are TONS that haven't had official English releases yet. Unfortunately though, a lot of them are a bit longer and therefore might be more of a risk than they're willing to take (I still give the now defunct CMX credit for picking up Swan and From Eroica with Love, which unfortunately were never finished before they went under). |

I am sure I am one of those people who helped them pick Go Nagai stuff as I am sure I have submitted Devilman in those survey's a bunch of times. LOL
I did pre-order all the Go Nagai books they are putting out though. Can't wait for the classic collection. I got to say Seven Seas is becoming my current favorite manga publisher. After Ed left (???) Vertical it hasn't been the same. And I am glad to see another company coming in and publishing some of same type of content Vertical was at one point. I did end up pre-ordering "Giant Spider & Me: A Post-Apocalyptic Tale" because of this podcast though. It sounds so cute. |
