people and websites say that anime is very popular in the world, but why do anime streaming services like crunchyroll only have 5 million paid subscribers?

There’s numerous reasons, anime being on more “general” services like Hulu and Netflix, not to mention good old fashioned illicit acquisition.

because only "battle shonen" anime like Aot, MHA, Demon Slayer are truly mainstream. Plus many anime target narrow waifu otaku audience which not appeal to "typical normie". Is this good or bad it's depend on person to person.

That's a fair point, and even shows that would be considers niche are airing day and date on mainstream sties. For example, how Mushoku Tensei aired weekly on Hulu and Re Zero aired weekly on HBO Max. We live in crazy times.

I come from an area where dubbed TV anime was the only way to watch anime. Seeing this kind of access these days is truly amazing. Yet, I still hear people tell me they have watched "everything" thus have "nothing" to watch anymore Rolling Eyes

@ Saeryen,

Please refrain from de-railing threads with your favourite franchise.

Maybe, if they translated the titles in other languages instead of always using the english one...

Because for most casual fans, or people that are not into anime more seriously as a hobby, they are not going to pay for a streaming service on top of other services they have. They might enjoy it, it might be popular, but for most it's not popular or widespread enough to warrant even more financial expenditures for streaming services. Anime is popular, but it is still niche. A comparison: Ferraris and Lamborghinis are popular and known the world over, but they are still very niche to own due to price. Something can be popular, well known to the general person, but also still be niche in terms of who supports it, buys it, watches it more regularly, etc.

I think this is something to remember. We are on an anime news site, so of course their is a perception that all anime is mainstream. However, go on the street and see how many people(not just teenagers and young adults) actually know anime. Probably very few. And they probably would mention Dragon Ball or pokemon before anything in the past few years.

Echo chambers are any easy way to assume how the world is, and it can be really easy to take that belief as fact.
