Yeah, I starting to wonder why they won't leave the video game shows alone. The only show i'd be intrested in from the video game universe is Kingdom hearts but I somewhat doubt seeing that one too soon.

I find it ironic though that there is an advertisement for Ragnarok the Animation in the same site that says it's the worst THREE times (review, best and worst of 2007, shelf life)...

i had the pleasure of actually finishing Ragnarok the Animation while back with fansubs...
god i don't know why i even finished the series...guess i wanted to see how it ended...and DAMM that was so pointless....entire plotline was so predictable and had no substance that i hate myself for watching it.... don't know why Magikano got bad review...i loved the gags in that series that i actually laughed entire time...it IS disturbing with unhealthy amount of brother complex but guess that's fun in itself...you just have to shut your brain off and just enjoy all the spoiler[memory erasing hammer]gag in that series... Tokyo Majin was pretty good imo....lots of different personalities trying to meet same goal....pretty interesting monsters trying to kill off entire Japan....it's pretty good action series if you're into occult themed series....i would give it a high rental if you aren't sure.... WOW!!! that's hardcore collection with pachinko machines....that's very unusual collection in itself.... but why Devilman??? |

I personally didn't find Ragnarok very bad. It didn't have much of a plot , and the character development is a little lacking, how ever, I play a lot of World of Warcraft and can relate to a lot of it.
I know a lot of the reviews are opinion based, but a lot of them seem to be biased. Plus it's almost like the reviewers never watched the entire disc before passing judgment. An acolyte's job is to be a healer (much like a priest in WoW), but you called her a white magic user? While table top RPG's are similar to MMORPGS, thus is only true for an RPG element. Computer based RPG's are built around two aspects, player vs enviroment (Mobs, Dungeons, and Quests) and player vs player. The fact that the characters talk about increasing base stats (Agility, Stamina, ect) only brings more of the RPG element into the series. I will agree that if you do not fully understand, or know how to play an MMORPG, then there is a lot that you might find boreing, and or would not understand. To me, if felt like I was watching a game instead of playing the game, which I feel was the original concept of the show. When I put the first disc in, the characters where in the world, partying, questing, and traveling. All things you do when you log into an MMORPG. In the end, I believe that the reviewers were more basing their opinions of the show off of a normal anime show, and not taking into account the background of how a normal MMORPG is played, or the basic concept of how an MMORPG works. Plus I might add, that I have never even played Ragnarok the game. |

All reviews are opinion-based because reviews are opinions. And all reviews are biased because all reviewers have personal preferences. "Biased review" is just code for "the reviewer didn't agree with me". |

Well, Bamboo said she'd played a lot of such games, so I'm pretty sure she understood all that. The main point is that just throwing in references doesn't make for a good show - it's how you use the references that counts.
Yeah. So people'd probably be better off playing the game instead, right?
It doesn't matter if the show is based off a mmorpg or not, it's still supposed to be entertaining. |

It seems to me that asking the average female commentator to review something that’s primarily moe fluff like Magikano is most likely to produce the same sort of review that most male commentators would give for a yaoi-flavored product.

Then explain how my friend (girl) thought the show was a riot - and is SO not a "lonely nerd" (in a serious relationship) Some females are cooler then others I guess.
Yes, because US mainstream (hell, Japan for that matter) media is SUCH a shining example of empowered, respectable women

Even having played Ragnarok Online for over a year, I agree that the anime is complete crap. I sat through the first disc and suffered as the extremely lame "in-jokes" tried to support a non-existent storyline, and the dubbing was in fact terrible, even having someone like Greg Ayres in it, who's normally entertaining. If you've played the game, skip the show.

Or an oldies review-forgotten whatever they do here. And why Devilman? Go Nagai is awesome. I love his fighting-is-done-sans-clothes style like the old Olympics. And his guys are sexy. Britannica-the excuse I saw in Newtype for so many gaming anime titles is in Japan they are perceived as having a built-in audience, thus saving a certain amount of advertising costs. There's already character designs to be modified for the anime & the basic threads of the plot are often there also. Unlike an original anime project where the story & characters are built from the ground up & then have to be pitched to the TV viewer or OVA purchaser. I've always found game-based titles to be a bit thin to a worst-case scenario where the Demonbane OVA just seemed like a 30 minute excuse for all the characters to run across the screen just to be sure the animators didn't disappoint anyone looking for their fav character. Although the baddie(with the guitar) at the beginning was awesomely over-the-top. Ooo, so many guys upset. Come on. Accept that your harem titles are as much fluff as anything else & live with it. I know Gakuen Heaven, on top of being a game title, is just an excuse to parade a bunch of hot bishies on screen & I revel in that hotness. It's not going to change the world. Yes, it has a plot. Yes, Magikano & all the moe/harem titles have a plot just like any comedy movie has a plot (& a lot of the really good ones manage to ignore that plot as much as possible until the wrap-up like Airplane or Naked Gun. Put the character in a situation & let them go--oops, time to wrap this one up) As a female, I also enjoyed a certain amount of the "jiggle" titles, but maybe it's the "moe" (which I'm vague on), but lately it just seems they all are so dedicated to being cookie-cutter similar, I can't find them funny. Burn Up Excess was great. Sorcerer Hunters was hilarious. Saber Marionette had it's moments. I was dying on the blandness of Yumeria. We have to have each "type" represented. She has to behave in a certain manner. It's too much work. Come on, you have to admit it's formula situation comedy stuck in one particular mode-geeky/nerdy/shy or isolated in some way guy surrounded by a number of hot/cute girls. It's like being a mystery novel fan or a spy novel fan. There are going to be certain elements that are overall the same even though, yes, each one does have their particular plot twists critics seem to ignore (conspiracy theory. It can't be they miss them. They choose to ignore them to write a review to get the fans of that genre riled up to comment. It goes with my theory about movie critics saying a movie is "confusing" being code for the critic spent all his/her time in the lobby buying snacks or writing the review because s/he had other plans & no time to do the write-up after the movie finished) |
