Finally watched Angel's Egg for the first time this year, like, a month before the 4K remaster was announced? Absolutely entrancing film and I was desperate to understand what was happening.

Also the gamer part of my brain thought, "This would be an awesome Souls-like crossed with Enslaved: Odyssey to the West vibes." Laughing

it's well-documented how getting current anime fans to watch anything considered "old" can be like pulling teeth.
You are more likely to get them to watch this, over a lot of other 80s Anime, include mainstream titles. It's unique enough to generate buzz to grab the attention of people who wouldn't generally watch titles that from an older era.

The Oshi title, I found hardest to wrap my mind around, was Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai. Angels Egg is fairly easy to follow, as there is no right or wrong answer to what's happening most of the time.

Oh yeah, one of my main thoughts upon seeing this for the first time was just going "Ooh, that'd make a sick desktop background" roughly every thirty seconds.

I'm looking forward to replacing my old Angel's Egg screencaps/desktop backgrounds with some fresh new 4K ones whenever the hell the UHD comes out.

"Part of me hopes that this new licensing and print of Angel's Egg means it can keep making some rounds at the kinds of theaters that would show it for those who want to watch it."

Saw it yesterday at the Rio in Vancouver. They also have showings tomorrow (Nov 30) and Dec 6: https://riotheatre.ca/movie/angels-egg-40th-anniversary-restoration/

It was definitely a thing! Totally agree with Chris and Steve about the soundtrack, I kinda knew what to expect on the story and visuals front going in, but the soundtrack is a wild experience in a theatre where they can crank the peaks up *really* loud.

Mesmeric is the word I use to describe it. I first saw it, good lord, probably more than a decade ago... but it stays firmly lodged in my brain, forever, while so much of the seasonal dross -- even from just a couple months ago -- has completely evaporated.

It's a hard movie to describe or even recommend to someone, but it's so unique, so evocative... it's one of the small handful of classics I genuinely believe every anime fan ought to watch.
