Great review.

Honestly to me, the story was so involving that I didn't realize that one game took up so much of the series until I started my second run through. Or the fact the team only plays 2 games the entire series. I think that credits that its a great series. Although the fact I didn't know before hand that the 2 games took up alot of the series might effect my opinion of it. Of course the reverse can be said too. Letting people know of the long games may help them enjoy the series better so they don't go crazy with "when is this going to end?!" (points to endless eight arc in Haruhi)

Like you, I guess I didn't really feel the dragged-outness of the series. I was just enthralled by it (marathoned in two evenings). I loved hearing the strategy in the players' heads as they would think through what they should do in what would be a matter of seconds in normal time.

Probably the only time I did notice it was when I would check the episode count and be all, wait, there's only three more eps to go, and they're only in the first round of the trials?? That was severely disappointing to me, as I want to see more. Plus during the episode where they built the ladder, they showed so many interesting looking teams, but we never got to see them!

I need the manga now. Neutral This was a fabulous sports anime; I wish there were more like this to buy. Cross Game and Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger (along with the missing OAV) would be most excellent (although I doubt we'll see either one of these, sigh). Crying or Very sad

I actually felt the complete opposite to this review; I thought the 2nd half of the series was better than the first ^^; I thought the pacing shifted up a gear as they entered the tournament and the show was better for it. The pacing before had been decidedly easy-going and whilst I enjoyed every bit of the 1st half of the series I felt it was the 2nd half that really propelled the show into the canon of classic sports anime. The Tosei game was much more exciting than the practice game against Mihoshi and I thought the production team did a fantastic job making the multi-epsiode game so compelling to watch. I'm completely clueless when it comes to baseball (don't have it in my country) but I was still avidly watching every play and hanging onto every word uttered.

However, I'm happy to see Big Windup get such a good overall review as it really is one of the best anime I've seen in years, and that's counting all genres, not just sports.

I marathoned part 1 of this series and then marathoned it again when I received part 2. I'm a working mom and so that says a lot. I sure hope that more of the series will be released in the states in anime and/or manga form.

Sadly there is no more anime in Japan at this time...

Although I do hope the manga comes here. That would be most excellent.

I don't know I still enjoyed the second half as much as the first. While the series did only focus on 2 games for the entire 26 run I found both those games very engaging. And the characters continued to grow on me throughout the series.

However as far as best recent sports series I think Cross Game has this one beat for the fact that it not only focuses on baseball but also the slice of life aspect (I would have liked more of that from Big Windup). It's not licensed yet, but I can hope.

Though I'm aware half the series was spent on one game, I personally liked how we got into the minds of the characters. I think their personalities were very well-developed and so I didn't mind how the game dragged on for episodes.
