Nice review Carl, but it felt like you undermined the goodness of it by smearing it's own obstacles on it.
Sorta like calling a well acted drama bad, because it has spickets of intentional comic relief. You should've accredited Aikawa's writing prowess for humor with Martian Successor Nadesico, not to mention his brilliance for writing with his handling of Twelve Kingdoms. I haven't seen Ayashi, but one problem shouldn't define a person. That being said, even accounting all of the "intentional side plots", a C+ for story might be a little low. And, if the show is such a successful and entertaining "different" experience, I'd award that show a B+. But then again... most of the story's best moments are in the 2nd half.... I think the episode I laughed the hardest was the one when Shunpei was following the spoiler[Naji way...]. TOO much tears fell from my face that day... I'm glad ANN finally reviewed some part of this wonderful show. It's one of my new favorites, and it's one of the most rewarding experiences I've had this year. |

I watched the first couple episodes of this show on Funimation Online, and I knew from the get-go that I was going to like this although I couldn't fully explain why. So I put it off and got the DVD's, and wasn't the least bit disappointed. Oh! Edo Rocket is fun entertainment done right. It may be uneven, but even that is done right for a show like this (I haven't seen a series like that since Jubei-Chan 2) and adds to the show's charm, and all the characters were equally charming. This was definitely a surprise title courtesy of Funimation offering something a little new and different from the usual fare, which helps make it more special. Edo Rocket is one of my definite favorites of 2010.

Okay, this is totally nitpicking, but in most scholarly terminology the medieval era in Japan ended with the Tokugawa ascendancy. This story takes place in the 1830s, which is well into the modern period. On the other hand... I really need to rent this one and watch it again. I watched it in fansubs three years ago, assuming that anything that required a knowledge of early-1800s Japanese society, as well as a whole lot of anachronistic cultural gags, would never get licensed. But it did. And I really want to see how it was adapted. |

This is a very underrated show and I can't for the life of me figure out why there aren't more votes for it in the encyclopedia. Hopefully the dub will give it a little more exposure, since it's actually quite hilarious.
One of my favorite quirks in the show is a character whose designs are very reminiscent of 90's anime. In fact, she appears early on carrying animation cels, seemingly oblivious to the fact that nobody uses those in the digital age of animation.

Heck yeah, I love this show. Watched the whole thing on FUNi's player and enjoyed it all the way.
I'm interested in how some of the jokes were translated since I know some of them are kinda referential. This seemed like a show up FUNi's comedic turf though. |

This sounds like my kind of comedy and my kind of dub. The line I quoted reminds of Shin-chan when Lollipop yells something along the lines of "Holy Smokes! Are we actually using the original script right now?". I almost died laughing when I heard that. Dub in-jokes are never unfunny and I love it when writers get creative to work around Japanese-only jokes. |

I've been planning to watch this show, based on the trailer (from which I learned that it's about FIREWORKS and ALIENS and BLOOD-SUCKING SPACE BEASTS and HELICOPTERS (WTF) and...um...I thought I saw pedobear in there) and a clip I saw (again with the scripting jokes...I have to quote it: "My flashback is cheap and I can't afford new characters, so these guys will be playing my ancestors *indicates Crudely Drawn Pictures of what appear to be attempts at chibis*" and, later, "You guys should at least try to match flaps!") on FUNi's YouTube. Now I'm toootally watching it...I never thought I'd get into this sort of thing, but after I tried My Bride Is a Mermaid, I actually started liking nonstop slapstick comedy. And I just love it when it parodies anime itself...
DANG. I've been waiting for an anime's characters to make a reference to the fact that they're in an anime... That's it. "Santa, I have a favor to ask you..." |

Well, and more importantly, it's totally in keeping with the humor of the series, which almost constantly breaks the fourth wall anyway, so why not acknowledge that it's dubbed in the dub? (IIRC, there's actually a line later in the series where one of the characters asks another how they're going to explain a gag to the international viewing audience...) |

There was also a TTGL in-joke but that's not until the next boxset. (was the Madhouse Studio joke in this one?) |

Oh Carl! Only a C+ for "story"?
 I still liked reading your review very much. I'm just afraid that a lot of people will just scroll down the page, look at the scores, and then just dismiss the show based on the scores!
Since I was one of those people who watched the whole show streaming with subtitles, then pre-ordered both parts the day it was announced, you know I'm just going to have to disagree with you on your scores. 
I got from this show something that others seem to be getting from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. A show that was totally different, outside the status-quo from other anime. Only without the gross-out humor. Also, imagine my surprise when I popped my DVDs into the player and discovered, not just a good dub, but IMO possibly the best dub that Funimation has produced this year! The script for the dub was very well done. I know that Funi has been taking a lot of heat for some of their creative localizations, but this one really worked well and was funny! So I can't really agree with your dub score either, since I think that dub at least deserved an A. In any case, I hope you like the second half of the show better. O.K. --enough fangirling from me for tonight.... |

This review reminds me that I need to get back on the ball with this show. I watched a good chunk of it on FUNi's site, but ended up getting distracted. Don't know why the distraction occurred, I was having fun with Edo Rocket...

Glad to see a pretty positive review for this show. Like other have said, it's completely underrated and I really hope Funi's release will give it some of the attention it deserves!
I'm also glad to see that people think the dub is good! I usually don't watch the dubs, but I think I'll check this one out now. You guys have me interested in it! (I have to say it confuses me to how Ayakashi Ayashi is "solemnly ridiculous" though. Solemn at times, sure, but ridiculous? It didn't seem much more ridiculous than shows with mystical/magical/awesome abilities to me. But perhaps my weak spot for that show is just a bit too big…?) |
