Pre-ordered this a while ago. Despite the unfortunate audio shortcomings as mentioned by Chris Beveridge on AOD, I love this series too much to pass it up.

Forgot all the other super powers out there. The power to manipulate paper is the best.

This collection is not out yet right? I can't find it on Amazon at all and on the Bandai store it's only available for pre-ordering. I hope they don't do something silly, like releasing it only in one online store that sell it for double the normal price and doesn't allow international shipping....

As far as I know, it's available on RightStuf and Bandai Entertainment's store.

Thanks for clarifying that up. After checking the RightStuf and Bandai Entertainments' stores I do see it's not out yet. But at least the RightStuf can send it abroad! That good enough for me Smile

Actually, at least three of the kids were voiced by kids. Rachel Hirschfeld voiced Anita, Megan Harvey(very cutely) voiced Hisa, and J.D. Stone voiced Junior.

Some credit must go to Talesin Jaffe for his excellent ADR direction. I take it that no extras means they won't have the fun commentary with him and the three girls? That's too bad.

Still, once I get my tax return, this set will be mine. Smile

I'd never throw down this much money for a single series, especially when I picked up all the DVDs relatively recently, but if you're willing to spend the money, you can't go wrong to R.O.D. The OVA is fun enough in its own right, but I'd rate the TV series as nothing short of a masterpiece. The main characters are wonderfully three-dimensional and developed, the plot is engrossing and emotional, the action is fantastic, and the dub is one of the best out there. Seriously, watch this show. Very Happy

Wow! Lucky lucky you!

I've always wanted to meet them, but I doubt they would ever come to the Houston con scene. Talesin has come a few times. He's a really great guy.

I hope you have the photo and autographs framed Smile

Excuse me, but what movie? The only result for a Read or Die movie is the OVA shown in one go.

Can I give a dissenting opinion? I enjoyed the OVA as absurd fun, but the TV series annoyed me no end. Of the three sisters, only the youngest is even remotely interesting. The other two are bland as heck, the quiet girl and the genki girl. The plot makes no sense: why does the UK want to take over the world again? Why is Mr. gentleman necessary to accomplish this? What possessed the writers to make the heroes of the OVA the sequels of the TV series? Add to this that the build-up to the finale was routinely sabotaged by "sister bonding moments" when it should have been exciting and suspenseful. In short, I didn't give a crap about any of the new characters, and while things got better when Yumiko finally showed up... it was just overall disappointing.

Not a terrible series, but very weak IMnsHO. Though actually I've met a number of people who agree with my nsHO, so I'd say give it a rent first if you've never seen it, and then decide whether you like it enough to buy it. A blind buy may disappoint you.

I agree that the TV series probably doesn't make much sense if you think about it for too long. But I was pleasantly surprised by the TV series in that the action is REALLY GREAT. Not as slick as the OAV series, of course, but stretched out over 26 or so episodes, I was surprised just how much ACTUAL action they crammed into each episode.

There are really some ridiculously fun action scenes in this show, and this isn't like when people say "This is a good TV anime action series" where there is as much posturing and posing and grunting as actual action. There are explosions and shooting and paper making and gravity-defying action galore, and the characters are almost always in motion, doing something. And very few of the action scenes are "cheaped out" (none of those stiff cutouts of characters flying at each other with speed lines followed by a flashing screen to substitute as "action" Laughing )

There's also quite a bit of well-done tension and suspense, as the characters spend at least 60% of the series constantly cornered or with their backs to the wall, and that gives the show a lot of urgency. I guess you could argue that momentum of the show is so forward-moving that it really just takes precendence over a coherent plot.

But for a veg-out experience, ROD TV is actually a lot of fun. I don't think this franchise is meant to be taken too seriously anyway. There's something inherently ridiculous and silly about the concept of the show. But it is fun!

I agree with everyone that the ROD OAV is just about the perfect action OAV though. It's slick, compact, and ruthless in its execution. A lean, mean, action machine.

I have to completely disagree on the hokey story comment. MAYBE for the OVA it's ridiculous, but the plot 'really' comes together in the TV series. A mix of sci-fi, espionage, drama and more just makes ROD the TV one totally complete package.

And it is definitely one of the best dubs Geneon put out when they were still around.

Too bad I'm broke as hell to get this.

I wouldn't mind revisiting read or die on blu-ray....buuuut 160 bucks for 29 episodes is a but to steep, maybe in a few years it will get super cheep kind of like when Royal space force cost 80 dollars and now cost 49. or it will just get lost into obscurity

A buddy of mine RELENTLESSLY implores me to watch the TV series of this...
I did attempt to watch the OVA 'bout 6-7 months ago, but... I really couldn't take the story seriously... And that was just the 1st ep alone!
So with that in tow, I assumed that the TV series would be more of the same... just longer, and with SoL goodness(which isn't something pushes me away...).

Key's review definitely desolves my fears and reservations and I now can go into this expecting good, if not great, times.

Also... how kind of you Key to mention Iwasaki's handiwork with deserving details, and even more deserving examples of his greatness.
Heck, even though it was his first(?), Now and Then, Here and There has one of the greatest soundtracks in anime I've heard.
Although... I really, really, REALLY, cannot stand Witch Hunter Robin. Still to this day, one of the most emotionally detached television shows I've ever seen...(I couldn't bear to watch any more after 8) Mad

Good review. Why oh, why couldn't they do a DVD release too?
