Hanayamata is set in Kamakura, a real Japanese city in Kanagawa Prefecture. Many backgrounds in the anime are based off real places in Kamakura.

The railway crossing shown in the opening credits is the same railway crossing from the 1st opening credits of Slam Dunk. Both are based off a railway crossing along the Shichirigahama beach in Kamakura City, Japan.

In episode 1, at about the very beginning, we see Naru and Hana dancing in a sea of cherry blossom petals that symbolise Sekiya Naru because she was the focus of that episode. The episode ends with a similar scene at about 18:54 to symbolise the resolution of Naru's problem.

In episode 2, at about 00:34, we see red roses that symbolise Sasame Yaya because she was the focus of that episode. The episode ends with another scene of those flowers at about 22:06 to symbolise the resolution of the conflict in the episode.

In episode 3, on the very start of the episode Hana and Naru shows a parody of the well known iconic introduction scene of James Bond movies.

In episode 4, at about 02:02, we see lily flowers that symbolise Nishimikado Tami because she was the focus of that episode. The episode ends with another scene of those flowers at about 22:46 to symbolise the resolution of her problem.

In episode 10, at about 00:17, we see a single sunflower that symbolise Tokiwa Machi because she was the focus of that episode. The episode ends with another scene of those flowers at about 23:07 to symbolise the resolution of her problem.

In episode 12, the beach where the Yosakoi Iroha Festival is held is Yuigahama, a real Japanese beach that was also used as the primary setting for the anime Shinryaku Ika Musume.

In episode 12, at about 00:32, we see blue star flowers that symbolise Hana Fountainstand because she was the focus of that episode.
