The anime is heavily associated with kabuki theatre. In addition to each episode being called an “act”, the series narrator is stage, TV, and film actor Ainosuke Kataoka VI of the Matsushimaya kabuki guild. Kataoka is co-host of the NHK series, “Kabuki Kool”, which gives fans an inside look at the world of kabuki theatre.

In episode 5, the chivalrous thief Itachi Kozō is a parody of a famous Edo Period thief named Nakamura Jirokichi, also known as Nezumi Kozō. Kabuki plays about chivalrous bandits (“gizoku”) were hugely popular during the period and dozens of plays were written about them.
