Trivia:

The original tankouban was published in 18 volumes of standard 180 pages in the late 1980s. Shuueisha later re-released the series in wideban format consisting of 16 chapters (roughly) and about 340 pages, spanning 10 thick books (hardcover too!).

Originally Hikaru was not meant to be an only child; in Matsumoto's initial designs she had an older brother, Kenji. Kenji Hiyama was meant to be a bit of a delinquing, motorcycle riding, cigarette smoking gang leader. He was also to be Madoka's boyfriend at the start of the story.

The manga was ended by cancellation. Shueisha wanted Izumi Matsumoto to end the manga which he was unable to do so by the 17th volume. He was able to expand the ending when the series came out in wideban later in 1987.
