Ganbare Chibi Gojira Picture Book Gets Adorable Animated Video

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The creature Godzilla is as dangerous and terrifying as they come. Still, he may have a soft side. In an adorable turn of events, the radioactive reptile has inspired a "Chibi Godzilla" incarnation, which is designed to be more approachable and easier to empathize with than the original. LIDEN FILMS Kyoto Studio produced an animated video to promote Chiharu Sakazaki's Ganbare Chibi Gojira (Do Your Best, Chibi Godzilla) picture book.

In the book preview in the video above, Chibi Godzilla introduces himself as "big and strong" but also describes his crybaby tendencies. The video ends with Chibi Godzilla producing a fiery display that pleases his friends.

The Chibi Godzilla project celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Godzilla franchise. Before designing Chibi Godzilla, Sakazaki was known for designing characters such as the Suica commuter card's penguin and Chiba Prefecture's official mascot Chi-ba-kun. The project launched in July, and it has since appeared on a wrap of the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, as a kigurumi character at this year's "Gojira Fes" (Godzilla Fest) event, and for other projects.

The Ganbare Chibi Gojira picture book shipped in Japan on October 24 for 1,300 yen (about US$12).
