Joe Hisaishi to Compose Song for Kōhaku Song Contest

posted on by Egan Loo

Award-winning anime and live-action film composer Joe Hisaishi (My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo) will write a song for the 60th anniversary outing of Kōhaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle) on New Year's Eve. Every year, the singing contest ranks as Japan's most viewed music television program. This year's theme is "Uta no chikara: mugendai" ("The power of song is infinite"), and the NHK public television broadcaster is asking its viewers to fill in the following phrase: "Uta no chikara ___" (The power of song ___). Hisaishi will take the viewer suggestions and compose a song around them.
