Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced during his company's financial results briefing on Friday that his company will release software titles simultaneously through digital downloads and physical, packaged software. The initiative will begin with New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS system this August, and will continue with the launch titles for the Wii U home console later this year.
Unlike other companies, Nintendo will allow traditional retailers to sell digital downloads by offering 16-digit codes for sale. Retailer can set their own prices, just like they can with packaged software, but Iwata expects that there will be little difference in pricing between digital and packaged releases. Iwata added that the Wii U's own price will not be announced at the E3 trade show in June.
