Final Fantasy XIV Staff to Consider Adding Same-Sex Marriages

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG), revealed during a live "Final Fantasy XIV Letter from the Producer" event that he and Square Enix are considering adding same-sex marriage as an option in the revamped game.

Yoshida had revealed during the Q&A session of the event that it will be possible to marry in the upcoming game. He then added that the topic of same-sex marriages has been a controversial one in MMO games for a few years now, and so at first only opposite-sex marriages will be allowed. Square Enix will then consider feedback from players to make a decision on whether to add same-sex marriages as well. Yoshida added that he cannot say if it will eventually be possible, but he and Square Enix will continue to consider the matter.

In the below video, Yoshida discusses the question at 1:23:33. English subtitles can be turned on in the video by clicking the "CC" button.

Square Enix announced in August and September that the new version's server-load tests and alpha testing would begin this winter, and the company is already recruiting testers on Windows PCs.
