StudioCanal to Release From Up on Poppy Hill (Updated)

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Ghibli film listed on StudioCanal's 2013 release slate, cinema release is planned.

A press release from StudioCanal lists the Studio Ghibli film From Up On Poppy Hill on its 2013 release slate. It also gives the name of the dub actors confirmed for the American release of the film, including Gillian Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Beau Bridges, Christina Hendricks, Ron Howard, Chris Noth, Aubrey Plaza and Anton Yelchin.

However, there is no confirmed U.K. release date for the film. Asked whether there would be a UK cinema release, a StudioCanal rep said, "We do plan on giving the film a UK cinema release, but have no further details at present.'

Adapted from the shōjo manga Kokuriko-Zaka Kara by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama, From Up On Poppy Hill follows a group of 1960s Yokohama teens in their bid to stop the demolition of their school's clubhouse, while two of the students have an increasingly close friendship. Hayao Miyazaki, Goro's father and Ghibli's co-founder, scripted the film. It originally premiered in theaters in Japan in July 2011.

North American distributor GKIDS acquired the rights to this film, and will show it in American cinemas this March.

Previously, StudioCanal's British arm was called Optimum, which distributed all the Studio Ghibli films in Britain up to and including Arrietty. In September 2011, Optimum changed its name to match its parent company.
