'Free!' Voice Actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki Hospitalized After Parasitic Infection

Anisakis parasites removed, but Suzuki takes time off work due to lingering pain

Tatsuhisa Suzuki, the 30-year-old voice actor known for playing Makoto Tachibana in the popular anime Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club and other roles, reported on Sunday that an hospital examination discovered Anisakis parasites in his stomach.

Suzuki's band OLDCODEX is releasing the single for Kuroko's Basketball's new ending theme song "Walk," and the single inspired the pop-up installation "Concept Studio & Cafe 'Walk'" at Tokyo's Shibuya Parco Part 1 department store. Suzuki reported that after he finished preparations for the installation, he rushed to the hospital due to a severe stomachache "that was no joking matter."

Suzuki underwent his first ever endoscopy, which discovered the Anisakis parasites. While the hospital removed the parasites, the stomach pain lingered. In the meantime, the work he need to get done had accumulated, but he could not work due to the severe pain.

On Sunday, Suzuki went to another hospital where he underwent another endoscopy. (Suzuki added he now despises endoscopies.) The test discovered no more parasites, so he returned home after being prescribed medicine to stop the stomach pain. After he took the medicine, the pain dissipated slightly, but it was still unbearable. He ended up sleeping, even though he wanted to work.

Suzuki added on Sunday that as a result of the warmer temperatures this year, the parasites are not dying off after entering the bodies of humans, and they are biting the stomach walls like they did in his case.

While the pain still lingered, he tried to celebrate his birthday on Monday, and he thanked everyone who sent him messages of support and congratulations.
