3rd Madoka Magica Film Tops K-ON! Film's Box Office (Updated)

Rebellion film is now highest-grossing film that came from late-night TV anime

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- (Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari) has earned 1.93 billion yen since opening on October 26. As a result, the third Madoka Magica film has topped the 2011 K-ON! film's box office total of 1.9 billion yen, and in the process, became the highest-grossing film that came from a late-night television anime.

Box Office Mojo had reported that the third Madoka Magica film earned a gross-to-date of 1,903,310,658 yen (US$18.4 million) as of December 8, a week earlier. However, Bunka Tsushin reported that the film earned total of 1,848,000,281 yen (US$17.9 million) as of December 8, and did not top 1.9 billion yen until later.

The film debuted at #1 by selling 271,279 tickets for 400,003,600 yen (about US$4 million) in its opening weekend. It then dropped to #2 in box office earnings its second weekend. (It dropped to #3 in the raw number of tickets sold.) It earned over 1 billion yen (US$10 million) by its 13th day on November 7. The film sold more than 1 million tickets in its first 21 days, and then more than 1.3 million tickets in its first seven weeks.

Update: The animeanime.jp website posted a corrected first-weekend box office total of 400,003,600 yen (about US$4 million) for Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion-, as opposed to the original number of 436,000,000 yen. Thanks, Ejc
