GKIDS reported on Tuesday that Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away anime film ranked #5 at the United States box office on Monday. GKIDS screened the film on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday this week to commemorate its 15th anniversary. The short film "Ghiblies: Episode 2," which has never been released in North America, screened after the feature film.

Box Office Mojo didn't report earnings for Spirited Away for the three days, but GKIDS stated the Monday screening ranked at #5 "ahead of Dr Strange." On Monday Doctor Strange earned US$499,818 according to Box Office Mojo.

Screenings on Sunday and Thursday were English-dubbed, while screenings on Monday had English subtitles. The film screened in more than 400 theaters.

Spirited Away debuted in Japan in 2001 and still holds the record for highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office. The film is the only Japanese film to win the the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

"Ghiblies: Episode 2" first screened in Japan in 2002 alongside The Cat Returns. Yoshiyuki Momose directed the short and Masahiko Nishimura and Kaoru Kobayashi starred. The comical story is set in an anime studio.

GKIDS will screen Princess Mononoke along with the "On Your Mark" anime short in the U.S. on January 5 and 9.
