I’m writing this out not through a great personal affinity or from deep knowledge (I never really got to Scar’s involvement in Brotherhood), but becasue I’m still quite confused as to why no one has done so, I thought there were great big fanboys of this pairing so I think it should be represented. I welcome a rewrite of any part of it.
Nominating: Edward Elric vs. Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise pic Type of Conflict: Ideological and opposite sides of a past conflict What It's All About: Scar is blindly seeking vengeance on all State Alchemists, the perpetrators of ethnic cleansing war crimes against his people and more specifically those responsible for the death of his brother and the rest of his own family. Whether the State Alchemists he targets were personally responsible or not he believes all should be killed, even if the denounce the actions themselves. For Edward, apart from having the duty of bringing in the the criminal is argues against Scar’s vengeful motives and tries to convince him of the wrongness of his quest. Why They Should Win: This goes beyond the duel of extremely powerful characters in kick-ass fights (although their fights do qualify in this way as well) but also goes towards one of the themes of the show. Edward himself could be swayed by vengeful motives but learns through his interactions with Scar that it leads to ruin, while Scar has to deal with his own conflicting feelings on the subject. Voting and nominations seem to have petered out, so I'm giving 24 hours notice on the nomination process.
Currently we have 132 nominations with a positive score, of which 121 have 2+ votes. I am adding a couple more below from series that generally get overlooked by these tournaments. I am also certain that we are missing several other worthy rivalries, but them's the breaks. Nominating: Nereids vs. Criminal Siblings, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue pic* Nereids members: Maia Mizuki, Rena Honjo, Shizuka Hayama, Yu Park, Gloria Criminal Siblings members: Wong, Chang, Lee, May Type of Conflict: Enforcer/Criminal, Competitive Rivalry What It's About: The Criminal Siblings are a group of criminal half-brothers and sisters (they all had different fathers) who have regular run-ins with the Nereids, at first individually and later as a group. Usually these run-ins involve one or more of the Nereids catching them in the act of some crime or a failed attempt by the siblings to get vengeance on the Nereids. Later on they have a back-and-forth rivalry over ownership of a sub, which the siblings call Agnes and the Nereids call Yomogi-1. Why They Should Win: Though the siblings are often played for comic relief, their ongoing conflicts with the Nereids (especially over the sub) continue throughout the series. * - I will get a better pic of the sibling for an official Guide entry. Novis Noah vs. Reclaimers, Brain-Powered [pic pending] Key Novis Noah Members: Yu Asami, Hime Utsumiya, Lasse Lundberg, Nanga Silverly, Kant Kestner, Irene Carrier, Comodo Mahama, Captain Laite Key Reclaimers: Jonathon Glenn, Quincy Issa, Winston Geybridge, Shiela Glass, Baron Maximilian Type of Conflict: Ideological Rivalry, Survivalist What It's About: The Reclaimers are a group of Grand Cher (i.e. mecha) pilots who work towards restoring an alien spaceship called Orphen - an effort which could ultimately have a drastic negative impact on the rest of the Earth. Those aligned with the U.N. battleship Novis Noa oppose them and promote a more gentle and cooperative approach with the Antibodies spawned by Orphen, resulting in them piloting mecha called Brain Powerds. Why They Should Win: This conflict defines the entire series. |

If no one's gonna bother with the nomination for C, guess I'm gonna have to do the job:
Nominating: Kimimaro Yoga vs Souichirou Mikuni, C pic Type of Conflict: Ideological rivalry What It's All About: Souichirou Mikuni is a wealthy and powerful Entre (fighter) in the Financial District who has his own faction called the Starling Guild who fight to minimize any effects that Deals (fights) between Entres and their Assets (partners) in the Financial District have on the real world. Mikuni takes an interest in Financial District newcomer, Kimimaro Yoga, as he tries to influence the boy into becoming a part of the Starling Guild. However as Kimimaro becomes more familiar with the influence of the Financial District on reality, he comes to realize that even minimizing the risks on reality still prove catastrophic on the futures of others thus driving him to oppose Mikuni's way of preserving financial stability of the Japanese economy. Why They Should Win: This is a battle of differing views that involve how to deal with a powerful influence effecting our world. While Mikuni is focused on retaining the present status quo of Japan's economy at the cost of the future of others, Kimimaro comes to believe that trust should be put in allowing people to have the future they desire. |

Personally, I think that the differences in characterization between the two series makes Ed vs. Scar a much weaker rivalry in Brotherhood than in the first one due to various spoiler-ish reasons, so restricting it to the first series seems like it would give a stronger match-up. |

Anyone else have an opinion on this? as a person who hasn't seen past a few episodes of Brotherhood, the first series was definitely in my mind when I was thinking it was such a necessary rivalry. if it stops being a rivalry in Brotherhood that's not necessarily a disqualification tough, as, they simply need to be a rivalry for a long enough period of time. |

I think that Ed vs Scar was a little weaker in Brotherhood, but probably not to a degree that will matter in the early rounds, and it's not so much that there are obvious weaknesses as a rivalry, but it does feel a little less emphasized in the later portions of Brotherhood.
Nominating: (I'll have pictures tomorrow afternoon/early evening) Kei Shindo vs. Miyako Miyamura, ef ~ a tale of memories pic (not a great picture, but it was the only one I got before my external hard drive started giving me problems. I might get a better one later, if it matters) Type of Conflict: Romantic Rivals What It's All About: Kei has had a longtime crush on her childhood friend, Hiro, but never had the courage to do anything about it. One Christmas Eve, while Hiro is on his way to visit Kei, he meets the somewhat eccentric Miyako when she “borrows” his bicycle. Miyako quickly falls for Hiro as well, and the girls begin to battle for his affections. Why They Should Win: Both girls have unpleasant personal histories that they hope a relationship with Hiro will help them overcome, which leads to their clashes being emotionally intense. The two girls utilize escalating psychological attacks against each other (probably not fully aware of what they're doing) to drive off the other. Ban and Ginji vs. Akabane Kurodo (Dr. Jackal), Get Backers pic Type of Conflict: Ideological Enemies, sometimes Professional Adversaries What It's All About: Ban and Ginji run a retrieval service, finding and returning lost or stolen items to people in need. Dr. Jackal is a professional delivery specialist whose job is to escort valuable items to their destination, often in the employ of the villainous malcontents who victimized Ban and Ginji's clients. Although they all will work together if a job requires, Dr. Jackal prefers to choose assignments based on how enjoyable he finds them rather than financial incentive, and what he enjoys most is fighting Ban and Ginji. Why They Should Win: Both Ban and Ginji, particularly Ginji, are altruistic people who often go beyond what is required when retrieving what was lost. Dr. Jackal, on the other hand, if he cannot fight a powerful enemy, instead takes sadistic glee in torturing and killing his opponents. Ginji get especially riled when they are in close proximity, and nearly comes to blows with him at one point while they are on a mission together. Dr. Jackal often makes a point of provoking Ginji to make him fight more seriously, and this in turn draws Ban's ire, because Ban knows Ginji hates the person he is when he's angry and serious. Daisuke Aurora and J vs. Claire Leonelli, Heat Guy J pic Type of Conflict: Professional Adversaries What It's All About: As a member of the city of Judoh's Special Services Division, Daisuke and his robot partner J's job is to try to prevent crimes from occurring. Following his father's death, Claire is the don to the most powerful crime syndicate in the city. Why They Should Win: Daisuke knows that Claire is both reckless and intelligent, which makes him incredibly dangerous. Because of this, he often keeps a close eye on Claire's activities in case something exceptionally troublesome begins to develop. Claire, in turn, sees that Daisuke is usually the one to disrupt his plans, and respects his skills in doing so, yet striving to outmaneuver him. Furthermore, Claire furiously hates androids, and several of his plots center around destroying J. Supporting Seishu Prefab Team vs Daimon, Cross Game Light vs L, Death Note Makoto vs Jinnai, El Hazard Ed vs Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist Outlaw Star vs MacDougal Brothers, Outlaw Star San vs Eboshi, Princess Mononoke Also, I'd like to rescind my vote against Tenma vs Johan (Monster). Um, Ggultra2764, we do already have a full write-up for Kimimaro vs. Soichiro here. I will treat yours as an official vote and alternate option.
First post has been updated, for the first time in a few days. (Geez, I've really been behind on updates this time around!) Two made their long-overdue plummet to the Cut List, leaving us with 123 pairings with a score of 2+ out of 138 total options. That means that we need five more. A list of those with a score of 1 is given below; please review it and see if there are any worthy pairings that you may have missed. At this time there should be no further nominations unless it's an exceptionally strong choice. There are going to be many solid options (I'm surprised that Saiga vs. Suitengu from Speed Grapher never showed up) out there that just won't make the cut because no one thought of them or couldn't be bothered to do a write-up. Them's the breaks. Actually, there's one that I feel is glaringly obvious enough in its absence that I'll still add it in: Nominating: Science Ninja Team Gatchaman vs. Galactor, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman pic Members-SNTG: Ken Washio (aka Gatchaman aka G1), Jo Asakura (G2), Jun (G3), Jinpei (G4), Ryu Nakanishi (G5) Key Members-Galactor: Berg Kattse (Operational Leader), Sosai X (big boss), lots and lots of nameless flunkies Type of Conflict: Ideological, Hero/Villain What It's About: In the original series, Galactor is a terrorist organization bent on seizing control of the Earth's resources. SNTG is a team of heroic ninjas formed, trained, and equipped to oppose their efforts in any situation, whether it be infiltration missions or head-to-head mecha battles. SNTG is quickly recognized by Galactor as a regular thorn in their side. Why It Should Win: It's one of the classics hero/villain group conflicts in anime and, pretty much, the sum and substance of the whole series. |

I don't think the Brotherhood conflict was that weak, except that it got resolved a bit quicker as compared to the first series. And anyway, I am under the (perhaps false) impression that most people saw the first series and Brotherhood partially or not at all, so it should not really change much. All in all, I am voting for Edward Elric vs. Scar, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise |

When Phibrizzo finally does make his presence known, spoiler[he doesn't acknowledge Garv as meaning much to him for their so-called rivalry and killed the demon off rather easily] which kind of made their rivalry seem one-sided. |

So I made an error or two when posting that last update (Himura Kenshin and Aoshi should've been at 2, for instance) and totally forgot to post the promised "score of 1" list. Ugh!
Anyway, with votes that have been cast since then figured in, these are the remaining contestants competing for what is now the last two spots. Note that scores with a .9 in them indicate contestants with a negative vote against them, so they will lose on tiebreakers should that become relevant. I... I don't know these rivalries with circa 1 vote. I don't know if new nominations are still allowed? Well, if not, ignore me.
So... Nomination picture Full Moon (Kouyama Mitsuki) vs Wakamatsu Madoka, Full Moon wo Sagashite Kind of conflict: Competitive, professional What's it all about: Mitsuki, a 12 year old girl, loves to sing. However, she has a cancer in her throat. One day, two death gods/shinigami arrive and tell her she only has one year left to live. She then decides to become a singer, right now - or else she won't be able to keep her promise with Eichi, both want to achieve their dreams. With the help of these shinigami (Takuto and Meroko) she turns into a sixteen year old and is able to audition and strive towards becoming a star. But of course it won't go that smooth. Madoka also aspires to be a singer and the two become rivals. They even battle with the release of the same single. Why they should win: The road to stardom is never easy. This is a classic rivalry - who's best? Will Madoka stand in Mitsuki's way? Nomination: Blast (Black Stones) vs Trapnest, Nana Picture Blast Picture Trapnest Key members Blast: Nana Osaki (singer), Nobuo Terashima (guitar), Shinichi Okazaki (bass), Yasushi Takagi (drums) Key members Trapnest: Reira/Layla Serizawa (singer), Honjo Ren (guitar), Takumi Ichinose (bass), Fujieda Naoki (drums) Kind of conflict: Professional, competitive What's it all about: Nana Osaki, one of the two leads of this series, aspires to debut with her band Blast. Her (ex-)boyfriend Ren was originally playing the bass in Blast, but leaves to fill in the spot of guitarist in Trapnest. Nana Osaki doesn't want to be his groupie and decides to go to Tokyo to make it as a singer herself. Her other bandmates join her and she finds a new bassist, Shin. The two bands compete, but that's not all. The tension between the two bands rises when Takumi, a notorious playboy, starts dating Nana Komatsu (the other lead, nicknamed Hachi). Nana Osaki is good friends with her and is afraid of losing her. Why they should win: The rivalry between the band goes deeper than just being two nice punk bands striving to become the best. Their relationships intertwine - Ren and Nana's love, Yasu's friendship with Ren, etc. Nana Osaki can be quite possessive and jealous when it concerns her friend 'Hachi'. Nana doesn't consider Takumi a good partner for Hachi and wants her to be with Nobu. It also feels as though she'd be losing Hachi to Trapnest (the same as when Ren left).
