[OT] Japan - where to go?

I am going to japan next summer for 3 weeks, and I am already planning the trip Very Happy!

Anyone have some suggestions for a place to go, otaku hotspots, a restaurant etc(..)?



Do anyone have a suggestion for a temple to visit? I would like to visit one I can recognize from an anime, but can't find one Sad!

While this isn't a topic about anime in any way whatsoever, we've had people make sightseeing threads before and they turned out to be pretty interesting and/or informative about Japanese culture in general, so I'll allow this.

You probably already know about Akihabara. It's worthwhile going to some of the stores there, if only just to look. Not far from there is the Shinto shrine "Kanda Myoujin", which is a good place to recuperate from the hectic Tokyo streets.

I see a lot more Shinto shrines than Buddhist temples in anime, partly because the New Year's shrine visit (hatsumode) is a useful plot device, and partly because they fit in well with supernatural themes of ghosts, yokai, and minor gods. A number of the shrines in anime are modelled on particular shrines in real life. I've only been in Japan for a couple of weeks, and haven't seen any of them. Lucky Star used the Washinomiya shrine, not far from Tokyo. Kannagi used Hanabushi Shrine, in Shichigahama, northeast Japan, but this area was hard hit by this year's tsunami. The Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto has appeared in various manga, and I think it made it to the anime of Aria and Negima. Kamichu used the Ushitora shrine in Onomichi, fairly far west.

You might want to go to a bookstore in a regular shopping mall, just to see how much variety there is to manga not aimed at otaku. And manga is cheaper in Japan than in the US, unlike DVDs.

Finally, consider the climate when and where you go. Summer in Japan is mostly very hot and humid.
