I disagree. They sound quite good given the talent that's around these days. And trust me, from a guy that's really picky about dubbing (especially about the titles he really likes), it could've been a lot worse.

Kari Wahlgren is the best person from Bang Zoom! to do Fuu, in my opinion. Her voice range is pretty high and sounds very natural unlike Wendee Lee who dubbed Ayako Kawasumi's role as Ruriko in Gate Keepers (Kawasumi-san plays both Fuu and Ruriko in the Japanese tracks, by the way). I'm glad they casted her.

Steven Blum, while not perfect, is an excellent stand in for Kazuya Nakai. When I first heard him (Blum), I wasn't all that impressed because I knew they probably wouldn't keep that twang that Mugen has in Japanese. However, after listening to more of the series I was pleasantly surprised at how they changed the langauge of the script (by adding a few curse words) to still make his voice fit the character.

It was a nice twist to compensate for the sound of the voice itself by making a few tweaks and making him into more of a potty mouth in the dub.

But, out of the 3 main characters, the only one I don't like all that much is Kirk Thornton's Jin. He sounds way too malicious and a little older than I'd like in comparison to Ginpei Sato's cooler and young, yet disciplined voice. It's not as bad as say.. Sean Schemmel's Gokuu on DBZ, but I like how Geneon handled the dubbing overall.

I heard that he stopped doing non-union work. So I think that means we won't be hearing him in anything done by Bang Zoom! anymore, which is a shame. He has a great voice (aside from his Alucard and Hideki, but every other role he does is solid Anime catgrin).

What are you talking? Nasty voice? Yeah, that's a good way to describe someone's voice; you make it sound like he's a pervert with his "nasty voice". If you think it's horrible, then try watching the shows first before you judge if they don't sound right.

Also, for someone who has a hard time spelling "character" correctly, and makes a judgment how good the voices sounds is freaking ridiculous. Jin's voice is fine, especially if you haven't watched the Japanese version. I had this big discussion over at the Champloo forum, and most of member agree that the only one that seems out of place is Fuu's voice. High pitch might be similar to the japanese, but doesn't come off natural when it's in english and can be quite annoying.

I was surprised at Winry's voice acting in FMA when her voice went really high talking to Ed in May 1st's episode on Adult Swim. It takes skill to do that correctly and not sound squeaky.

But the high pitchiness is a part of her character. She is only 15, anything deeper probably wouldn't make her sound like an annoying and energetic kid. It's better than having her sound like Motoko Kusanagi or Faye Valentine Anime dazed.

Fans who aren't use to high voices just need to open up their minds a little more and broaden their perspectives. It's not so bad to hear someone with a high voice (unless they're bad at singing too Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop).

Yeah, I'm in support of picking a VA sometimes based on how the character acts/is animated. Winry exudes so much bubbliness with the way she acts (look no further than Ep. 25) I thought her VA was pretty dead-on.

Also, why do fans complain with the "It doesn't sound like the Japanese VA" argument? I mean as long as it sounds good SO WHAT? It doesn't mean they're acted poorly. More than half the people I talk to who hate American dubs complain about that, and I don't get it. There are different styles and vocal inflections that just don't cross continents, and even if the original Japanese VA's spoke the role in English it may not sound right. Now if you're talkin' about Sanji in One Piece that's a different story Rolling Eyes. Sweet sassy molassy...

Anyway I hope I like Samurai Champloo. I'm getting a vibe that I won't like it for some strange reason, and usually my vibes turn out to be correct.

I'm not speaking for all of these people, but for myself, it's really just a matter of personal preference. I don't think every character needs to sound like a perfect adaptation of their Japanese counterpart, but it certainly helps retain a little bit of who that character is.

I mean, if you just casted anyone you thought had a nice voice as someone who might sound totally different in Japanese, it might be more difficult to percieve that character's personality.

Why not cast Chris Sabat as Kenshin or Lex Lang as Tsukasa then? As long as they sound natural, who cares that they completely kill that character's image, right Smile?

And don't misinterpret me here, I do like dubs on ocassion (except for ADV's), my favorite companies being Ocean Studios and Bang Zoom! Entertainment/ZRO Limit. Some of the particular dubs I like are the first 3 DBZ movies, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, X (TV), and Outlaw Star just to name a few.

I'm just real picky because I care, that's all Wink.
