I just got through reading Volume 7 of Battle Royale and I have to say that Shinji's spoiler[ demise contains one of the longest and most excrutiating death scenes that I have ever seen, read, or heard about. It makes the Black Knight/King Arthur battle in Monty Python and the Holy Grail look ridiculous!
 I mean it takes up 100 pages! These are the crimes perpetrated on our poor basketball hero:
1.Hit with multiple bullets from an Uzi 2. As a result of these wounds his entrails fall out 3.Hit by 6 more bullets 4.Entrails fall out again 5.Foot blown off 6.Survives bomb explosion 7.Receives 12 more bullet wounds 8.Hit by one more bullet He has a chance to take out Kiriyama but misses. I don't know why. It would seem that his aim could still have been good after receiving all these minor flesh wounds. And what makes it all the more touching is that he flashbacks to all the good times in his life, like when he was beating the crap out of people at an arcade, or hogging the ball at a basketball game or his friendly neighborhood cyber-terrorist uncle, or how he used girls as make-out pals. Oh, those were the good old days Shinji! And then all the guys in this volume are balling out tears that are so profuse that it looks like slugs have left slime trails on their faces. Just when Shinji seems to be dying with some dignity, he has to realize that Kiriyama is a cold-blooded killer.....DUH! He just killed you stupid! The whole book just became an absurd farce. It was just painful to read, not because of the graphic nature of the death, but just that it became so ludicrous that Shinji was actually capable of moving or even be alive after the first injury, it just became humorous. I kept on waiting for someone to cry out "They killed Kenny!" ]Next volume promises to pile on more camp as Mitsuko rolls out the sexual innuendo. I'm still trying to figure out the body fluids that were exuded in her spotlight story a couple of volumes back! |

Well, it's just the style of the artist; complete "over the top-ness!" If you got something bad, he takes it an makes it 100 times worse and I guess that's why I love Battle Royale (I'm preparing my Top 10 list right now). I've become desensitized to most forms of "safe" entertainment so it takes something like this to make an impression on me. This manga ain't supposed to be realistic. It's like a movie made by Takashi Miike - now and then you're confronted with stuff that's high on the "WTF-scale", but you simply have to accept it as tendencies in the reality of the story. In the end it's all up to the reader to simply take it or leave it and I'm sure that can be difficult for some because this series is definately not for everyone.
BTW: If you dislike the hyper-reality of BR, then you should stay lightyears away from Masayuki Taguchis earlier work; Baron Gong Battle. It's almost too hyper even for me! |

Just wait until you read volumes 11 and 12...spoiler[Hiroki's fight with Kiriyama is very brutal]
I love BR. The book is better, but the manga and the movie are both excellent. I hope they animate it some day. |

Well I read the interview with the artist, who admitted that Shinji Mimura is his favourite character. It was difficult for him to kill off the character
That's why he went extra length with Shinji's departure. It wasn't like that in the book though.

Well, it makes more sense now. I own the novel but have not read it. I figured I'd read the manga version first and then take a look at the original work. I guess the other part of it is that at first the death scenes are really gruesome but I guess after so many volumes you just become desensitized to it a bit. But no matter the artist's feelings, the Shinji thing was WAY overdone. I'll purchase Volume 8 later this week to see Mitsuko's hijinks. |
