Well I know that there have been quite a few edits in the Shonen Jump manga titles by Viz. Like in Shaman King, Dr. Slump, and Utimate Muscle. There's more but I can't think of them at the moment.

Dr. Slump? Really? What could possibly be offensive enough in that to warrant an edit, I wonder? (I haven't read the manga but I've seen some of the old TV show and it seemed really innocent.) There have been some minor edits in I"s, mostly to censor nudity. And although I haven't read it, I've heard loads and loads about the infamous Tenjho Tenge edits. |

Dr. Slump's actually had quite a few edits. In one scene, Arale's schoolfriend, I forgot her name, offers Arale wine. This, of course is translated to "Super Punch."

Anime On DVD has a whole forum on manga edits.
They also have a thread on manga that free from edits. |

Viz edited (rather oddly, given what they took out compared to what they left in) [/i]Descendants of Darkness vol. 4 for sexual content.

That's really ridiculous, I think. I'm sure the edits don't ruin a perfectly good manga, but it would still be nice to see Dr. Slump in its original form. Kinda the way I feel about I"s. The edits don't ruin the manga for me, but I'm just slightly irked. |

It's sad really, I guess the only solution is to have a Japanese version of the manga really and read them side by side. I don't know Japanese but at least the art would be uncorrupted. Who knows why boobs are covered up but decapitated heads are ok? I mean is there some monkey setting somwhere with a banana and a cigar with a stamp, redlining this stuff?

Umm, no. That was sarcastic hyperbole, outlawwolf.
Back on topic.... Classifying a manga series as edited or not depends, at least in part, on how you are defining an edit. Alterations to the artwork in order to tone down violence or cover up nudity certainly qualify as edits. However, there are other things that may or may not qualify as edits, depending on the person. In most cases Viz will replace all Japanese sound effects with English ones. Depending on the location and style of the SFX major or minor alterations to the art may occur. This type of editing is present for all series in the Shojo Beat and Shonen Jump lines. The other manga translation companies take varying views on SFX. Then there are the translation edits--points where the English translation differs from the Japanese context (ie, the changing of wine to "super punch" as previously mentioned). This category also includes name changes to people or places (ie, switching out the name of a Japanese pop idol that most Americans will be unfamiliar with to the name of an American pop idol). These types of edits are more noticable in some series than in others, and again, the various translation companies have different policies regarding this. *shrug* I haven't noticed obvious edits in the series I collect (apart from translated SFX, which I do and don't count). Of course, if you want to be truly technical any series that is translated is edited because it isn't in its original language. ~Shadrach Anki |

Dr Slump has some editing, not really necessary, but the best you can get if you don't read japanese.Tenhjo Tenge is heavily edited,Shaman King has some editing. Much of the Shonen Jump is edited by Viz as well.

Also, Ghost in the Shell was edited a lot (from what I read, I can't buy the manga yet). I guess there was a lot more going on between Motoko and those other girls (I don't know their names. I dunno if they even say them in the TV series/movies) but yeah.... a lot more.
Also, with my luck, somebody already posted this, but oh well. In Shaman King, the marijuana leaf Yoh wore on his shirt was edited out. Some of the edits really... seem kinda dumb, but then again, they did the same edit to Jet's marijuana shirt on the Adult Swim edit of Cowboy Bebop. I don't understand though, if there's something that may seem to make parents unhappy, why don't they just sell an edited version of the manga and an unedited? Like they do for the upcoming Naruto releases? Would it cost too much for them to do? I don't see how, anyway, if they were able to produce those limited edition holographic covers of Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Naruto, for example, then why can't they make un-edited versions of manga titles? People should be aware of what they're buying, and if not, just slab a sticker or a little logo somewhere on the book and do what they do with video game titles or something. |

Does anyone know if the Yugioh manga has any edits to it? I've heard that Viz edited out Jonouchi flipping his middle finger in one of the volumes, but I have no idea how accurate that info is and what other edits are there, if any?
