Hello all you people what can read the japanese/possess fan-edited versions of the future releases of Eden by Hiroaki Endo, would you say that this is a series that improves over time? i have been discouraged by the first two volumes because of the lack of character development/exposition and the rather cold presentation. Should i continue buying/reading the series or should i give up?

How could you have been dissapointed by the 2nd volume or even the first chapter of the first volume? If you don't like the third volume then there is seriously no hope for you, or possibly your tastes for that matter...

I don't think the characters are a problem. There's only so much development that can go into less than 400 pages (in this style of deconstructed storytelling that is) and so far most characters have been well established and have been set up for future development. Not only are the characters interesting at this point, but the "cold" presentation is nessisary for a story like this. Excessive humor or sentimentality would undermine the world that Endo is trying to create, and what little warmth there is (the conversation between Helena and the other girl in volume 2 stands out) is well done. If you don't like stories like this then you don't like 'em. I think the manga is on the right track and I've heard from reliable people that it keeps getting better (I imagine as characters develop), but like milcor1 so eliquently put it, some people just have diffrent tastes.

thank you Kagemusha. I think i will hang on for at least a couple more volumes. however, i think the thing that most deterred me was how the story jumped in the first volume without explaining itself. i hope that as more back- (or is it middle-) story is revealed, i will gain more appreciation for it and its characters.
PS: I love how forums are such welcoming places where people can voice an opinion and get a helpful response.

While the sudden jump suprised me, I don't think it's a bad thing. I am sure that more of what has happened between the first chapter and the present situation will be explained. Just think of the first chapter as a prologue, since that's what it really was.
I, for one, plan to continue this series.

I've read the first 11 volumes and I plan to translate the rest of it...believe me, it improves. At this point it's probably the third or fourth best manga currently running, behind Berserk, 20th Century Boys, and possibly Death Note.
Oh yeah...just a warning, there's some sexual content later on...it's played for laughs, but it's there. Not hentai, of course, but...yeah.
