In terms of your opinion, encompassed by the believed popularity and quality, what has the right to be cast as the best of them all. As we all know, there are a bunch of them, but we're talking best of the best. Which garners the attention, and deserves it. You'll have to excuse me if this has been done before. For me it would have to be Dragonball/Dragonball Z.
[EDIT: Changed "Best" into "Favorite" since it's all subjective. -TK] Last edited by Jarmyn on Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:10 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Judging from what I've seen in this forum as far as this type of subject goes, you really can't judge which one is the best, because a whole bunch of people are going to say something different. I think instead of the best, it might be good to say which one is the favorite, because in reality, there is no best in the world of anime. It'll be in, but then tomorrow that title will belong to another.

Well, what about you? Give your own opinion if you feel like asking it of others. |

He hasn't given his opinion, but here's mine: Hunter X Hunter. I don't think there is a show out there that more accurately describes encompases everything that makes a shounen a shounen. It has magical powers, a stubborn but basically realistic main character, his small posse of good friends, an absolutely insane indescribably creepy arch-nemisis (Hisoka... well kinda... he's KINDA the bad guy, it's wierd), a great fantasy world (better than most); it's also got monsters, pirates (they act like em anyway), mafia, video games, fighting tournaments, volleyball, and elite exams based on physical and mental skills, it has just about everything.
It's got all that and it's still amazingly coherent (though the volleyball caught me off guard a little |

Well, I myself, tend to prefer the likes of Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin for my shounen action anime fix. They're subject matter is a little more mature and the storylines and characters more complicated while still having some good humor and cool action sequences. I don't want to jump the gun since it's still airing but if I had to choose one favorite it would be Bleach as it has the best storylines I've seen a cool cast of characters that I immediately liked, highly entertaining fights, and virtually no filler accept the current arc which is quite entertaining filler at that with the original author given some creative control.

How so kruszer? I guess you could say they're better shows in general, and then I couldn't argue with you as that's opinion; but as for the show that fits into the category of "shounen" best? I can't say about Ruroni and Yu Yu as those are both still on my "to watch" list, but it DEFINITELY beats bleach imo in the spirit of shounen. Though... for the record gave them both 10/10 (I might have to take one of those away from Bleach for the terrible turn the fillers have taken... I can wait a lil' longer) as I love both series.

If we're talking about the best shonen series then we have to be talking about Fullmetal Alchemist.
Shonen series generally have a weak point somewhere: their technical merits aren't up to snuff, they don't have much story beyond the action, they use too much filler, or they're paced so slowly it feels like the series is stalling just to stretch out 5 episodes worth of plot over a whole season. FMA avoids all of these problems, delivering instead an involved and exceptionally well-paced story which does an excellent job of balancing comedy, action, and darkly dramatic content. It also features some of the best artistry and technical merits of any shonen series. This is, of course, assuming that you're not treating Neon Genesis Evangelion as a shonen series (which, technically, it is ). |

My hat would have to be tossed in with One Piece. The sense of freedom and friendship throughout that show has always left feeling good inside whenever I watch it. The characters are vibrant, the world is imaginative and fun (with the exception of the main rule that in order to become a main character, your childhood must be shit), and the story just never seems to get stale. Also, the humor of the show has always gotten to me which is something I always felt was lacking in most shonen series.

Maybe off topic... but the whole shonen thing gets quite confusing for me based on what is supposedly not shonen. This is meant to be the main distinction problem between them.
Seinen - more grownup - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinen (examples from the site: Berserk, Chobits, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Hellsing,) and... Shonen - for youger audiences - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shōnen ,(examples being: .hack, Hunter x Hunter, FMA, Rurouni Kenshin and Elfen Lied.) Now I know that with these kind of definitions there will be a blurry area, but I can't see where Hellsing is more 'grownup' than Elfen Lied... If you read the list on each site, they could almost all jump from one list to the other. Obviously Wikipedia isn't the law, but just going on these definitions, the whole thing seems a bit confusing to me. Out of the Naruto/DBZ-esque lot, I'd have to say Bleach is pretty damn good. But I'm not sure if FMA etc is included as a shonen etc, so can that be included??? I just don't know any more. |

I second the Hunter x Hunter (as I always do). I like it for different reasons, although I agree with those stated above. In my opinion, HH protrays all the classic shonen elements but is distinct in its characterization. Although Gon has many of the qualities typical to the shonen hero, he also embodies many "traditionally feminine" characteristics, such as empathy. (The quotes mean I don't agree with traditional definitions of what is feminine and masculine, but I find them useful here for description purposes.) In addition, it does a great job of developing unique backgrounds for the main characters that show emotional conflict without ever compromising its shonen status or drifting into the ralm of angst and melodrama. Angst and melodrama can be great but would ruin the entire feel of this series for me. All in all, the characters and story seem typical at a glance but manage to skew the stereotypes in a way I find to be unique. |

As much as I love One Piece, I cannot agree more with Fullmetal Alchemist. No amount of blind fanboyism can get over just how tight and brilliantly executed the Fullmetal Alchemist anime is. Issues are brought up and resolved in a timely matter, and events aren't a second pace to the action. Not to mention even the most minor of battles are treated like significant battles in terms of execution and animation quality. I do have to mention One Piece on the merit that typical long running downsides like filler is kept to a minimum, and while the story is generally dragged out more than it should be, it's rare for me to ever be bored while watching it, even 271 episodes down the road. And Elfen Lied ran in Weekly Young Jump. I have always been under the impression that it was a seinan magazine... |

Geez, It's hard to choose because most of my favorites are shonen titles, but as usual I'll have to lean towards DBZ as being my first choice, just because Akira is my favorite artist and because I've prettymuch stuck with this series as being my favorite my whole life anyway lol.

For me it would be Bleach as well simply because I think it has some of the best action sequences, which I consider to be an important part to good shonen anime.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with those of you who've said Full Metal Alchemist. Quite frankly, the show's haphazard dalliances with "serious" story matter are insulting at worst, and comical at best.
When seeing the first episode, it did ring true as a tightly written series with both comedic and dramatic sides, that could be fully enjoyable. Unfortunately, it turned maudlin and pathetic in what I could only see as a pathetic scrabble for "More Drama!" in about two shakes of a lamb's tail. The more "genocide this" and "philosopher's stone that" that the creators tried to cram into this show, the less and less it became enjoyable - and I'm a bleedin' MATSUMOTO fan! I thrive on melodrama! Now, if you were to ask me about the top Shonen show, I'd have to say that no show before - or since - has given shonen viewers everything they've asked for (over the top comedy, great characters, incredible action sequences, touching moments, more cool "stuffs" than you could shake a stick at) than Trigun. Ten years and still strong, Yasuhiro Nightow's touching tale about a gunfighter with a heavy consciense and goofy grin is one of the benchmarks of anime in North America. Though personally I'd choose Bubblegum Crisis or Dominion Tank Police. |
