Pluto gets downgraded from planet status. Anime world scrambles to adjust... So, how many characters does this affect? |

I think this'll affect more than anime characters. The whole education of science and astronomy will now have to be rewritten.

Is there still Sailor Sedna? I mean it is a "planetoid" and Pluto is a "dwarf planet", so which one is bigger? I think Sailor Sedna would be much cooler....
Anyway, I think this was kinda' a bad decision. So many people worldwide have accepted Pluto as the ninth planet in our Solar System, and a fraction of them aren't going to get the news due to some people's lack of accessibility to a computer or television. This doesn't really affect me though.... I was already forgetting the names and order of all the planets in our Solar System! |

It wasn't a poor decision, it was a necessary one. If Pluto qualified as a planet then we were facing possibly hundreds of planets in this system as we discover more past the orbit of Neptune. They had to be altered and categorized more effectively. It's like stars, there's so many in the universe they've been categorized in to varying types from newborn stars to long dead stars that still have only a hint of life within them and to brown dwarfs which are massive balls of gas that just couldn't achieve the fusion required to become a star.

I think it is a bad decision. I mean to me a planet is a planet when its own gravity shapes itself into a sphere. So for me Pluto will always be the 9th planet orbiting the sun. Even though it is smaller than the moon(which is the size of South America), it still has enough gravitational pull, to "pull" itself to be round. And that whole "Plane of orbit" talk is bullshit as well. If Mercury orbited in the exact oppisote plane would it some how not be a planet. Not to mention that it mostly likely does have an atmosphere for at least 2/3 of its orbit. I see no reason to say this is not the ninth planet, and somehow reclassify it as a "dwarf planet".

It takes very little gravity to shape an object in to a sphere in the early days of a solar system. There's just simply far too many of them out there now to call them all by the same term, because despite how they were created there's very little similar about them. If Plute became a planet there would just be far too many of them out there, we'd be in a system of hundreds of planets by the end of the next few decades. It had to be redefined to account for it. A dwarf planet is a perfect definition, like a white dwarf or brown dwarf star, it's almost a planet and has similar characteristics of a planet in its birth but ultimately fails to become one due to certain circumstances.

It really doesn't matter to me, since I'm not much interested in space. However, the fact that Pluto does have some influence on anime makes me agree that it will hurt anime in certain ways.

Haha ^^, when I heard of the new and dropped planets debate, Sailor Moon was the first thing I thought of (That’s how I learned all the planets in the first place. Everything I know about the universe is now wrong. Really screws a person up y’know?)
So…we have the Inner sailor soldiers intact…but we drop Pluto to a dwarf planet…. And add….Sailor UB313 (I refuse to call her sailor Xena -_-) and Sailor Ceres. Naoko Takeuchi can make a continuation. Sailor Moon SA! (Sailor Moon Sailor Dwarfs!) And make it all chibi-fied. The New SD planets can be like, Chibi-usa’s little buddies or something. (Even though sailor Pluto was like…super tall…But whatever )
Anyway: on to how it affects anime: It’s true Pluto is in a lot of anime, but I don’t remember anything too critical, so is Ceres (Even when it was just a big ‘ol asteroid). I’d say it’s a good bet most people won’t even notice for a while. It’ll be gradual. I don’t think its Earth (or Pluto) shattering ^^ If nothing else, in the future, it’ll be easier to date when anime/literature was made. Just look for the anime where they think Pluto’s still a planet. ^^ Yay History: Actually Dargon, you’re kinda right. I believe the specifications for planets are vague and really broad (I’m not sure when all this dwarf stuff happened) something like: They just need to be round, orbiting a star, and bigger than everything else in the immediate area. Pluto isn’t the biggest thing around it (Neptune is). So, the only reason Pluto was a planet in the first is because of some Arizona Laboratory in1930 called the Lowell Laboratory. P. Lowell predicted their was a ninth plant in that general area. He came up with this because Uranus and Neptune had weird orbits, so this guy thought that another planet, a larger one, was responsible for that, what with gravity and all. So, they then found Pluto, which was kinda sorta around where he said it’d be, but because of undeveloped technology, all they could tell about it was that it was there, and it was round. They figured it was probably around Earth size. So they made this big public relations campaign and went around telling everyone about their fated planet. So Pluto’s just a victim of a public relations campaign and bad instruments. But not a planet. So I think: Just because it’s been called one for a while, I don’t think they should keep it as one. It’s not, so we should demote it to dwarf planet. At least it’s not just a big rock. Now we just have eight planets, and three Dwarf planets (are any of them red? I could make SO many red dwarf Jokes). Just Eleven. ^^ UB313 (Xena) and Ceres. That’s not too much to remember. |

Sailor Moon: well fanboy ratings are down, and i'm afraid we're gonna have to do some downsizing. Sailor Pluto, your services are no longer needed. turn in your scepter at the front desk by the end of the day,

Damn V1cious that evil That said Pluto can't be consider a planet because of the fact that it orbits an another planet, therefore it wouldn't be right to consider it a planet.....also the they almost voted in one of pluto moons to be a planet.....and they were going to name Venti presented by starbucks..... Till next time, Delta Kiral |

Sorry, nope. For the record, this is hardly a "new" debate since I've been hearing about it for a decade and I know they've been talking about it much longer than that. Ever since Pluto's size and orbit was ascertained, everyone knew something was up. It just wasn't until we formed the current model of solar formation that we realized just how not a planet it was. Continuing to call it a planet when it is clearly not technically, is like trying to defend America's ignorant refusal to switch to the metric system on a moral basis. EDIT: Somehow, I managed to misspell the only italicized word... Last edited by selenta on Thu Aug 24, 2006 8:49 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I know, I though this wasn't going to be a really big issues.
It is in everywhere, check this one: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060824/ap_on_sc/planet_mutiny I guess there it is going to be a new ideas, of making new anime with this issue. |

Your right I am wrong. You guys sure know more about physics than I do. Not to mention knowledge of the galaxy. It is ok though, but I bet Carl is rolling in the grave right now.
This makes my logic circuits go into flame mode but I will refrain. I am disapointed in the International Astronomical Union community, next thing you know we will call it comet Pluto. |

Situations like this are why I wish scientists would just shut up until they have solid information. Sometimes they jump to conclusions way too quickly. (Anyone remember that skull that was supposed to prove beyond all doubt that humans evolved from apes? Then someone noticed that it was a complete fake but only a long while after. And why the heck can't we switch to the metric system? It's so much easier to comprehend. |

News Flash: Millions of adults and children alike return to primary school as it has now been decided that this change is retroactive as of when Pluto was first discovered, thus rendering nearly every single project about the solar system a complete failure.
