That wacky Asian peninsula!

OK, so it's official...? Korea can produce anime, and it's coming out in the U.S. from companies like AD Vision, Central Park Media, and new jokers on the block Anime Crash. (Saw news of this on the usual websites out there like http://www.animeondvd.com/news/pr.php?pr_view=232 and on Korean news websites for CT News and the Korean Herald).

I've seen Korean things like "Doggie Poo"(licensed by CPM), and "Olympus Guardian"(Anime Crash?) and some of it's anime-esque enough (haven't got to see "Wonderful Days" or "My Beautiful Mari" yet tho'). So I think this whole turn of events beggs the reasking of the question; what makes anime, well... anime? Does it have to be 100% made IN Japan, does it have to be written BY Japanese, does the target audience have to BE Japanese, does it have to have spoken dialogue in Japanese language...? Or does it just have to have a specific look and feel to it...?

(And yes, I am taking into account that lots and lots of "Japanese" anime has the real animation work done in other countries like Korea/China anyway because it's cheaper, while pre and post production work is done back in J-pan).

I used to be a staunch Japanophile but lately I think that if it looks good, it shouldn't matter what country the production company is based in.

I hope I am not alone in my thinking this way. Any thoughts?

My understanding is for anime to be anime it had to be produced in Japan. However, if other countries start to produce anime-ish productions then the term might move from Japan-centric to more of a genre name.

It doesn't really bother me so long as it's good. I mean, I heard "Demon Diary" was a manwha, but I flipped through one, and it's really pretty nice looking, as well as having read good reviews for other Korean manga. I'm not so sure about Korean/Chinese anime though. My rule is just so long as it's good.

People who have been around for a while know that this is a question that ANN is forced to re-evaluate every once in a while.

We are *Anime* News Network, so we're about anime, but we're also about what interests our reader's to a certain extent. While we don't cover much Japanese pop-culture, we will talk about some satelite items. We'll also ocasionally cover items such as American manga or anime styled works, items such as AmeriManga, Antartic Press, Megatokyo, and Adam Warren's Dirty Pair.... These are by people that are themselves fans & consumers of anime & manga, people who have been influenced significantly more by the story telling and artistic styles that are seen in anime and manga.

But we decided a long itme ago that we were about anime, not Asian animation. We also decided that we wouldn't give the time of day to people or individuals who were trying to cash in on anime because it's "the next big thing." There are so many companies that produce animation and comics that have one or two features that are similar to the stereotpical anime features, ie: big eyes, purple pair.

So where do we draw the line? It gets really hard sometime to decide whether or not something should be covered.

Take Anime Crash for example. Their titles aren't Japanese, but if the Koreans working on the titles are all highly influenced by Anime, what's to make Anime Crash's titles any different than MT, AP, AM or DP ?

The whole validity of the titles "anime" and "manga" is in question here. Take a well known manga, say Gunsmith Cats. Now imagine if Sonoda was exposed as a fraud tomorrow, he's not Japanese, he's actually a retired white middle class American. Would GSC suddenly become "not manga" ?

It seems that the South Koreans and the Japanese have been living in a very simular "cultural stew" for about thirty years the same way Europeans have done.
That doesen't mean they are same (and considering the long, unpleasant, history between the two countries the Koreans would hate to admit I might be right). If you were to walk down the steets of Seoul or Tokyo, except for the signs and language would it be more different then say, Rome or Paris?
And yes, there are differences, particularly in religion and views of history ("Imperialistic Gaijin threaten Holy Motherland. Great Father Emperor summons Divine Wind to Deflect Them", the Japanese Government's offical history of WW2).
But overall living in a simular world brings about the creation of a simular product. I would say we are one breakout series away from where most fans won't care. Cool
