As it says i bought my very first manga today Razz . I've been an anime collector for a few years now. but i just noticed suncoast has started carrying manga. I figured i would start with kare kano(his and her circumstances) vol. 1.

Do yal look for certain things in the manga you read or do yal read any and everything. Personally, i like to have a story to read and action to watch(anime)...am i naive? Rolling Eyes

I mostly read the mangas that anime movies/series I like are based on in order to compare the anime to the manga. After that if I like the manga I look for others by the same author.

Obviously, one does tend to be attracted to manga titles that they recognize from anime, but I usually read just about anything to at least try it out. Some titles are surprisingly good, you know? But, honestly, I go to the bookstore, look at covers/titles that look interesting and then get my library to order them. That way I can "test the waters" for free. Smile If I don't do that, I just buy the first volume of a series and see if I like it or look for reviews online.

Oh yeah, and Kare Kano is a good manga to start with. I also enjoy Mars and Chobits. Hmm...Love Hina is a popular one, but I found it rather long and repetitive. But, like I said, I'll read just about anything! So, don't be too picky, just pick something up and you may end up really enjoying it.

I used to just buy any manga that I liked the cover of, but I found most I bought on a whim turned out to be one of those mangas that is an enjoyable read if you only read it ONCE but any more than that it just becomes bland. So usually I read up on any titles I'm interested in buying, then if I'm intruiged, then I go and buy it. Pretty fool proof since I've been following the method for two months and all the manga I've bought within that time span I love Very Happy

Artwork's definitely a factor. Gotta have some realism. No cartoonish or fluffy crap. But in the case that I do have to endure that stuff, I'd like as little repetition as possible.

Congratulations. Some great manga for people just getting into it is Battle Angel Alita & Love Hina. But His and Her Cirumstances is still quite a good manga. Enjoy!

generally, if you are unsure about a series, its a good idea to ask around. people can be very informative and its a lot safer then buying manga that you won't even like

It would be Cah-reh Kahn o as best I can tell. The "r" is a soft "r". Sort of between an "l" and a "d". Arrgh. So hard to discribe. Sad

First thing I do is search for a title and read up on it a bit. If it sounds interesting, I'll check it out at the store. I look for yaoi/shonen-ai, although it's not a must, it is a plus, then I check for artwork. Is it interestingly drawn? Or does it look like my artistically-impaired half sister drew it? If it's sometihng that a series I like is based on, I'll buy it too, like Gundam Wing. Bishounen also help along a decision, and manga-ka that I like. For instance, if I see something by Sanami Matoh, I'll probably flip through it. Same with Yu Watase.

I agree. I recently asked a good friend of mine about this situation. She gave me some good information on which manga titles are popular and where exactly I can order them or buy them from. It's nice to have a friend that's well informed on the subject. Cool

Nice philosophy, Aaron. As for my advice, here it goes:
BERSERK!!!! BUY AND READ! BUY AND READ! BUY AND READ! X is cool, too. As for comedy, see if you can get your mitts on Excel Saga.

I usually go manga news hunting... reading about synopses on potential mangas. After hundreds of series, I narrow down to a select few that I can afford based on the length of the series, the storyline, and the popularity.

The last part is a bit tricky since there are a few series that I really love that majority of people have never heard of. Example: Mint na Bokura. if I mention it's by Yoshizumi Wataru (lady that created Marmalade Boy), then everybody knows...
