Kind of off topic here but why are these the same covers as Viz's dvd's? Did Viz give permission to them for this or is it just standard for anime covers to be the same because I noticed some anime dvd covers in Japan were the same as the ones here?

Because they are all using the original R2 covers (except Viz's version is zoomed out a bit).

Mr. Usa I. S. World, was Viz the original, primary producer of Bleach? No.
Does Viz hold the exclusive global distribution right of Bleach? No.
So why do AVP and Hi-Yu have to ask Viz, instead of Dentsu, for the permission to use the original Japanese cover?
About the cover art: here in Taiwan, where most DVD are released in the same manner as the Japanese release (i.e. low episode numbers per disc), fans demand licensors to use the original cover art as long as Japanese license holder permits -- for some, to the extent of translating the title only on the spine and leave the front cover intact and untranslated. However, some Japanese companies require international releases to have different cover art in order to prevent reverse importation, and fans usually would not hesitate to show their disappointments when licensors apologize for not able to use the original cover art due to contract restrictions. Sometimes American licensors change the cover art due to reasons not from the Japanese side:
FUNimation's Desert Punk volume 1:
Original R2JP and R3TW Sunabozu volume 1:
Okay, maybe Carolco Pictures no longer exists, but I don't think FUNi wants to meddle with Paramount:
By the way, remember to use the [quote] tag properly.

Damn, I knew $5 was too good to be true....oh well. At least I know better now and what to avoid. I should thank all of you for that. Real quick though, does anyone know why some bootlegs are unplayable?

Ok the Top Gun and Indiana jones covers completely over the top and awesome is this a common thing for Anime covers or was it just Desert Punk who did this. I know Pani Poni Dash (R1) did a mock on the Terminator.

Thank you Dormcat for one of the best linked images I've seen here. These covers remind me of the television series Spaced (the guys who did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) Special Edition cover which is a clear parody of Star Wars.
I hate how small the amazon.co.jp images usually are. Their US site allows you to click on the thumbnail to get a decent enough image, but the Japanese site doesn't. I often browse the English SF novels their to see some neat reinterpretations on the covers of the novels. Many English novels also need to be broken up into a few volumes which adds to the cover count.

I'm under the assumption that amazon.co.jp is probably getting their pictures from a mass-update service and not directly from the publisher or distributor. It addition, small images seem to be surprisingly common among Japanese web pages. Even official product sites often use tiny images that look absolutely microscopic on my 15" 1400x1050 travel-sized notebook. But, sometimes if you get creative with google you can find other websites with slightly larger images.
