Hello,
I'd like to draw your attention to my new, illustrated, research note on "Japanese color animation from ca. 1907 to 1945" at
http://litten.de/fulltext/color.pdf.
It also covers the loop film known as "Katsudô shashin" or "Matsumoto Fragment" (although it is not a fragment) which is the oldest surviving Japanese animation film, even though it is very short.
