That sounds about right. It would've been my movie, if I lived my childhood in Japan in the 80s.

Hahaha!! Now that is a great story. Man that is really something. Again it seems that it's those small bits of hope that somehow pay off.

Don't let him fool you: Suzuki planned for that to happen all along. He KNEW it would end with Miyazaki forced to make another film! That devious (genius) swine!

I've heard that the Anime industry can be hell to work in. In the 60s studios use to have full time staff and between productions they would talk among themselves and practise their animation skills. Then in the 70s and got rid of them and started using freelance, which is why he founded Ghibli.

Miyazaki had a lot to do with that seeing as he was the Shop Stuart for the animators union at Toei Douga back in the 60's during several nasty labour strikes at Toei. It nearly was the death nell of the anime industry in the first few years of the 70's. It got so bad even he gave it up eventually. It was during that time that Tezaka's MushiPro company went belly up too. Dem's was some bad times for anime.

"So get into debt, and come up with your next idea?"
If we all were like miyazaki... unfortunately...that's the very reason why Ghibli has stopped making movies...cause even his son can't be "miyazaki enough"

At lesst Goro Miyazaki has followed in his dad's footsteps, but Tezuka's kids don't seem to want to be animators/directors like their dad was.

Seriously, I gotta admit that that's a lot more interesting of a back-story than if Miyazaki said it was part of his personal vision or a dream project, or something. 'Cus it proves how brilliant the guy is, that he can make such a classic film out of a throwaway idea which could bomb in other hands.

Great to hear this aspect of the origin of one of the most completely enjoyable films in anime history. Laputa is still one of Ghibli's best, among a list of incredible films.
