That's great to hear! Thanks for the confirmation. As for the "Family Friendly" version, I think it's a good idea. While personally I've always preferred the Japanese version I've had to explain to a lot of people why I (someone who has continually complained about PG-13 dialogue in R-Rated anime titles) had a big problem with the amount of profanity in Castle of Cagliostro. I also think it's a great idea to include the other two English dubs as well. |

I'd wager that it's more a case of the masses not wanting to watch 30+ anime they never grew up watching driving vintage anime off of Cartoon Network. Not because Lupin and the gang swore in the Pioneer/Phuuz dub. It had an amazing cast, even if it played a little loose with the script at times. Way better than the Funimation cast of the TV specials. For my money, Tony Oliver is the only English dub voice for Lupin that really "gets" the character. |

Actually, it was because, even when they weren't "Crap!"-ing all over the series (causing one critic to ask "Does Zenigata kiss his mother with that mouth??") Pioneer's TV dub script was BAD. Really bad. Like, Sgt. Frog bad, and I ain't just making generalizations, here. (Adult Swim, of course, hates any non-fight/noir anime, so Pioneer had to sell it as a "sex comedy" to get the potheads interested, and the script was jam-packed full of snarky slacker jokes, hyperactive "clever" delivery that was supposed to sound like parody-dub for the anime-haters, and ear-bendingly stale current pop-refs that would make Funimation cringe. But, of course, not as many Bebop and Bleach-era fans knew a good Lupin dub from a (horrendously) bad one, and the blame got put on the early-80's animation and Monkey Punch style: "Eww, it looks so, like, old, why does it not just totally die already?" To this day, people who've never seen it still believe that, but Sgt. Frog wasn't the first disk release we ever bought saying "Who cares, as long as it's still got the subs!" |

The original Japanese version of the second Lupin TV series makes pop culture references and sex jokes as well, just more muted. The English dub certainly embellished, but it still conveyed the characters and situations faithfully. And Tony Oliver is a lot closer to Yasuo Yamada than Sonny Strait or David Hayter.
It's not a perfect English dub, but I can forgive its flaws a lot better than the terrible delivery of most other English dubs for the franchise. |

I have the Manga DVD release but have (ashamedly) watched it only once. I don't remember the language seeming particularly out-of-place to me, but then again I wasn't really thinking of it in family-friendly terms when I watched it. I'm definitely double-dipping for the Blu-ray; a film this classic absolutely deserves it.
(Actually I need to stock up on all of Discotek's Lupin offerings. The first series release looked like it had a bunch of fun fan-expert commentaries, and I'd love to do the "watch ALL the dubs!" experience with Mystery of Mamo.) |
