Howdy!

Last night I had an enjoyable evening at the bookstore. My sister, my kids, and I camped out in the kiddie section, reading our favorite books. My sister devoured three mangas (Hot Gimmick, GTO 15, the last Mars) while I only got to read one (Tuxedo Gin 2). I have to chase the kids around.

Anyhow, I was wondering how many other people do this to get their manga fix! It's a lot easier to do this at Borders and B&N cause they encourage it. However, you have to stand up in SunCoast so I don't go there.

Oh yeah, and that bookstore had THREE displays dedicated to graphic novels. That's awesome especially during the Chrismas season.

Well they actually forbid this kind of thing in my city....... but I do it anyway Razz
If there is a time when I dont have the cash for the next volume of Video Girl/Naruto/Eden I try to read through them at the manga shop Wink if I can do it or not depends on what kind of staff is there. If I am dealign with the younger staff - they bug me all the time. If I am dealign with older people - its fairly easy to read the whole volume.
Too bad there is such a small variety of manga here.

So long as I see folks putting back the manga in the right place (and right way), and not scattered about the store, i'm perfectly fine with people reading manga in my bookstore.

HOWEVER, a bookstore is not a library. If your not paying for any item, or mess up/throw items around, your techniclly not a customer, and are loitering.

When I have the time (and no money) then I go to Waldenbooks and read manga. There's no place to sit, so usually I'll stand up or say "to hell with it" and sit on the floor. Anime smile
They never tell me anything since I'm a regular customer. *two thumbs up*

I never read entire manga at bookstores. I just skim through the beginning and the end, and if I like it I buy it for myself.

I really don't care if someone previously read my manga b4 I bought it. It really ticks me off when people mention how they hate when other people read manga in the store because they like their books in perfect condition. Thats fine but I'm sure everyone has a manga in their collection thats been read carefully and they ignorently believe it's brand spankin new. As long as people know that that's not their manga and they need to be really careful with it, I don't see any problem.

I usually buy manga at a bookstore. I haven't visited my local Borders but that would be the easiest place to read whole volumes while relaxing. The manga stores I visited in Japan had all the volumes shrink wrapped except for maybe one first volume testers of each series. So you really couldn't find out what happens without buying the volumes.

In Japan they also have phonebook size Weekly Jump with all the latest manga chapter releases, so reading the entire publication in the store is not possible Razz.

Also
After I finally get some cach for the manga I ask for the new wrapped version of it (they always have few under the coutner). So my mangas are always brand new Wink

As for reading mangas in Japan
Yes - you cannot read new mangas in the bookstores. BUT if you go to the Used Manga shops you can read all you want. Those places were like libraries. I read 5 volumes in one of those stores. But if you want the new manga - read it in the used manga store, and then buy the new one Wink

And I think I will post it here:
one of the stores that sells manga in my city (Empik) announced that there will be no more reading in their store. You either buy or dont touch. The stores itself sells alot of books and magazine. Yesterday some guys went there and spent 2 hours at the store reading some magazines. They completely destoryed them. So now the stores has a new policy.... its because ass-holes like those people wont be allowed to read their manga!

Eh, I don't think you should read whole volumes of manga in the store. There's nothing wrong with reading the first chapter or flipping through to see if you are interested, but you should really buy the book if you are going to read the whole thing. Manga isn't all that expensive.

If the store doesn't mind and you're discreet about it then it's not so bad, but I can't stand it when 3 kids sit down right in front of the manga section with 5 volumes in their hands and read for 3 hours. It's just rude to the other customers. This happened yesterday, when two girls were in Borders grabbing mangas they were interested in, then they sat down a foot from the shelf, each holding about 6 books, and read them all.

So if you do read manga in the store, please do it one volume at a time, because there are other legitimate customers interested in buying those volumes, and they certainly take priority.

If only I had the time. I usually go only for a few minutes, and am in a rush. It angers me when some of the kids read the books....right in front of the section O.o And it is impossible to get a book when they are right there. If they don't move...well, lets just say I never have to go that far to get them movin'. Twisted Evil Anime catgrin Usual book stores have places to read. I saw 2 thingies to hold up Manga at Barnes and Noble Anime smallmouth I was so happy. None of what I needed >.< So, I like to see them read, just not in my way. Hmm, I should get a bunch of people to read any books at B&N one night Anime smile

At my Barnes n' Noble they have a ginourmous manga section. I usually pick out a few titles read the beginnings in one of there chairs and I buy what I like. It is really annoying when little kids sit there talking about how cool there gundam mangas are, but in the process block off the whole row that has manga, and then get really annoyed when I ask them to move so that I can get something.

Gundam? I have to deal with little kids with Inu-Yasha, DBZ, any manga with an anime on the TV, and girls manga (Chobits, Ceres, etc.). Plus, they have stolen the DVD's and posters out of the Newtype USA Magazines.

I blame it on poor parenting.

Plus, Borders does some poor planning on their layouts, which barely meets ADA requirements in some cases. The Borders next to me has a manga section 45 inches from a stage. Have one kid block that section witha pile of manga, and your looking at a bona-fide lawsuit.

Too bad USA retailers are so sissy-assed to bending to the customer, it's sickening. This policy would mean the death warrant for any business like that.

Same here. Besides, I usually by my manga at a local anime/manga shop and they frown on people doing that sort of thing.

Barnes and Noble have big cushy comfy chairs all over the store, and it's like they're begging you to read the stuff in there, so I have read manga in store when my mom is taking way too long, and they have those chairs. If it's at another book store without the chairs, I don't bother reading in store.
