Very sorry to hear about this; I considered myself a fan, and always kind of hoped she might get a shot at directing at Ghibli. I say that because of an illustrated novella she wrote called "The Tree at the Center of the World" (世界の真ん中の木). It was really impressive; I wondered if it might be a veiled proposal for a movie that unfortunately never happened.

And rest in peace, Makiko Futaki. :'( You created so many beautiful scenes for Studio Ghibli's films. Thank you for all the wonder that you gave to us viewers, I'm very thankful for your work. My thoughts go out to her family and friends.
