It kind of helps that it had a concert event lottery ticket for what'll be it's biggest concert to date. That's actually the lowest first week sales for an event ticketed idolmaster CD that I can recall so it looks like it squeaked by on account of being an album in a low competition week. Had it been a single it'd have been swallowed up by the new AKB48 one.

So true. If we look at how other Idolmaster albums has sold, it is pretty obvious why this one sold higher in the first week. Highest first week sales of an Idolmaster CD with an event ticket is the "THE IDOLM@STER LIVE THE@TER DREAMERS 01 Dreaming!" single... and that one has already been beaten by the rookie seiyuu Love Live! SunShine group Aqours in total sales already (67,428 vs 71,644),.

Not to mention, other anime-related albums (Houkago Tea Time, Houkago Tea Time 2, μ's Best Album Best Live collection II, Utamonogatari) have obtained #1 in the Oricon album weekly chart with much higher sales than what Idolmaster has done here, and with no concert event ticket bundled as well. The only problem is they are not game-related albums... and in Love Live!'s case, all its game-related CDs are singles rather than albums.

*66,820 130,781 49 Houkago Tea Time
127,367 204,606 35 Houkago Tea Time II
*85,086 148,691 51 μ's Best Album Best Live collection II
*66,451 137,787 21 Utamonogatari
*33,000 *33,000 *1 THE IDOLM@STER CINDERELLA MASTER Cute jewelries! 003

Note: I only compare to anime-related CDs, because obviously mainstream CDs nearly always sell higher.

I've said this plenty of times on MAL, but it's the sales that matter not the rank, because something can be #1 with no competition, as is the case with this week.

Well Amazon alone can show how rank doesn't necessarily ratio well to sales because that iDOLM@STER album was rank 1 for a while and it still only managed about 6K more than Love Lives latest single which had middling ranks. That's always the case with iDOLM@STER though it seems. Kind of makes you wonder what Love Live Sunshine's numbers are going to look like once the anime starts up if it's already practically double what the next most popular anime music related thing is likely to sell.

So basically the only reason it got number one on the charts is because it was lucky enough to be released during a quiet week? Geez, that sure puts a damper on things.

Not that I care. The anime completely turned me off Cinderella Girls.

I would say because Love Live! also has a strong presence at storefront and retailers other than just Amazon JP. We can see this with the Love Live Anime BDs, where every single one was underestimated by Amazon Stalker. Idolmaster has a male dominated fanbase of 9 males to every 1 female. Based on sales trends, anime with male dominated fanbases usually have Stalker estimates very close to or higher than what they actually end up selling.

If μ's was any indication, the anime should provide a nice boost to sales, but obviously not as big as it was for μ's, as Aqours is already quite high profile among anime-related artists despite consisting of rookie seiyuu. I mean many in Japan expect Aqours to continue with the legacy μ's left, but realistically this is extremely hard for them to achieve. Not many anime-related artists have come close except perhaps Houkago Tea Time (they didn't make it to Kouhaku though) or MIZUKI Nana (?).

The listed performers mentioned in the articles are for the Tulip CD, not Cute Jewelries 003.

Indeed, but I think you have to give IDOLM@STER credit, it releases more CDs (albums or singles) than any of those other titles, and by a lot (orders of magnitude in some cases), so it's just a matter of time one of those chart at #1.

I would correct you a bit: it's the overall sales that matters, not the single item. For example the lottery ticket included in this CD is shared across three other SKUs for June, and depending on the release date/stock situation, I wouldn't be surprised if this CD sells another 30,000 by end of the month.

@Alabaster Spectrum

Well it seems Guilty Kiss' sub-unit single sales is going to be what everyone expects it to be, the BiBi of Aqours (sales wise at least). 12,766 on day 1, and this has no event ticket, mobile game serial code, etc, to boost sales up. This Idolmaster album did 10,648 on day 1, so Guilty Kiss could pull a 35K+ first week.
