Yuki Kaori is always able to take something and twist it with suspense and anything shocking and put it into her series. Like Angel Sanctuary, I love the art and storylines that she uses within this series, because it makes you want to read more. Set in spoiler[early 20th century England, the Count Cain has to solve mysteries and outsmart his own father's organization while at the same time having issues within the family and so forth. But even Cain is cursed, as he is the product of a forbidden love between his father and aunt.]

Just finished the series in German. I'm not a fan of shoujo manga, but I always make an exception for Kaori Yuki. How is the English edition coming along? IIRC, you got the second part of the series first...

I never really thought that much of Godchild when it was running in Shojo Beat, it all felt too episodic for my tastes. I do think however it might have been better if Viz had serialized Cain Saga instead, because I've heard that there are important details contained in there for understanding what's going on.

The first five volumes are even more episodic, but it's true they are important, since they introduce several important characters. I didn't mind the episodic feeling though, the ones in God Child tie together eventually and I'd rather read about the murder of the week than the boyfriend of the week...

I agree with you, marie, in that it was too episodic for me to take interest. Actually, I did like it a bit until we got to spoiler[Disraeli]. In other words, it had a good start, became a little so-so, and then I starting reading NANA (Wink). Yuki Kaori's art is usually a hit-or-miss with me (for example, I didn't like Angel Sanctuary at all), but the art was decent here; it fit the cryptic mood well. In the end, though, I only ended up liking Riff as a character.

I actually do like Angel Sanctuary, at least what I've read of it (only the first three volumes). I really have a strong preference for continuing storylines, though there certainly are some exceptions to this (mainly comedies).

Yuki Kaori's art however is definitely lovely and I do like how she uses darker themes in her work.

Meh, I guess it didn't click with me. I'm planning on rereading a whole lotta series soon, so I might as well add this one to the list (since it always receives really high ratings), and maybe start Cain Saga for this so-called tie-in. Fruits Basket fans may note that the title will be on the list, though I haven't read it before -- just skimmed -- so technically it's not a "reread." (Happy, fighter? Very Happy )

Happy to hear about both series Wink Yuki Kaori's work definetly has dark themes to it, but the way she draws the characters while adding the themes in is what will draw you to her works. I would like to see sometime if she has any artbooks out. Those I wouldn't mind getting.

I know there are a couple of Angel Sanctuary artbooks (I've seen them in German stores), but I'm not sure if any were released in the United States.

There's an Angel Sanctuary art book out. Which is absolutely gorgeous. I've never been a big fan of her work, but I have always loved her art.

I didn't care much for Godchild, either. I'm not a fan of episodic content. In fact I really quite dislike it. It was such a turn-off from the series that I even stopped reading the serialization, way-back-when (and I read every chapter of everything, even if I don't like it that much). I was interesting in reading Cain Saga. But then I decided against it since I didn't like Godchild. I may go back and pick that up though, if it helps develop things. I also did like Angel Sanctuary, but I don't like really long series. Although, it's one I have been thinking of reading lately, especially now that it's finally finished.

Well, Godchild is a contiuation of Cain Saga. And actually Cain Saga is four series put together to make the title: "Cain Saga". Godchild would actually be a part of Cain Saga as well, but since it's a longer series I think they just released it as is.

Well, is Cain Saga the same style as Godchild, if they're technically the same series?

Towards the fourth series is when the art style starts to become the same. The first three series are of the older type when Yuki Kaori just started out I would assume.

Sorry, I meant the style of the story. Is it episodic, too?

The first volumes known as the Cain Saga/Count Cain were released way back, early 90s I think. The series was put on hold, because the author wanted to put all her energy in her new series: Angel Sanctuary. 7 years later, she continued the series under a new name: God Child.

For some reason (I guess it had something to do with the dated artstyle found in the first half) the second part of the series was released first in the US. Even though the first half is very episodic (even more so than the first volumes of God Child), it does provide some valuable background information on several major characters.
