How many people have seen the Initial D that was dubbed? You know, the "Tricked Out" part of the DVD.
In my opinion, it sucks, that part anyway, because they used rap! They didn't even bother with trying to put some American techno in it. If I had seen this back when I did like rap, I would've loved it, but, I've been listening to Classic Rock for about a year, and I've grown to see what rap music is.
But, what does anyone else think about the "Tricked Out" portion?

And that would be an underappreciated artform that has a myraid of styles most of which don't get heavy rotation on music stations.

Personally, I don't see this "Tricked Out" version as anything more than a novelty item, an Extra. No better than director's commentary, only less informative. Initial D fans were cheated out of a proper dub, plain & simple.

I HATE THE DUB! it would have been alot better if they didn't change the background music!! Now that is getting low...now its all gangster/rap type music. and i love the opening song in the original. oh well. i can still just watch the classic subbed which is the same.

The problem lies not with what music they decided to replace the original with. Regardless of what they chose, be it rock, rap, techno, or some other form of music, there would always have been viewers that didn't like that music.
The problem is that they changed the music. IMHO its always better to stick with the original music, forget all the stuff about the sanctity of art for a second and look at it logically.
First off, the original music & scenes were designed to work together. Look at our recently posted review of DBZ: Brolly for a similar issue.
Secondly, since you are guaranteed to offend some people with changed music, be it because they don't like the new music or because they are offended by changes made to the show. Either way, you've probably lost more than you've gained by appealling to a limited demographic by changing the music to appeal to them.
On top of all this, Tokyopop is the company with the "100% authentic" line of manga. Admittedly, that's their manga only, and the anime was never branded as such, but it still smacks of hypocrisy.

I'm getting a STRONG feeling some cable network station (more likely MTV or Speed Channel) is going to broadcast this "tricked" version.

And ironically, TokyoPop made all those changes for the sole reason of getting it on TV.

Rap being underappreciated?? Do you realize how many radio stations ARE playing rap? Almost all the ones that don't play one of the following: Classical, Classic Rock, Country, and Oldies, those are the few that don't have it. It gets very heavy roatation, even look at MTV, all the music videos on there ARE rap! So, to say that rap is underappreciated, is pretty incorrect.

It wasn't that good, you didn't miss much.

More likely MTV because of all the rap music. But then again, Speed Channel may pick it up, but I'm placing my bets on MTV.

A good portion of the genre is largely ignored by most major outlets. You are only seeing one type of rap and that is whatever the major labels are pushing. There are so many more talented artist that don't make it onto MTV or radio stations like Dr. Doom, Twalib Kweli, Rass Kass, Blackstar, Common, and others. So to say just because they chose rap its wrong and if they had American techno it would have been okay is hypocritical for the reasons Tempest listed.

Actually, MTV doesn't play "nothing but rap," they play nothing but pop. I've been seeing little pop princesses like Mandy Moore and Clay Aiken on there infinitely more than any rap or rock artist.

We seem to be straying a bit OT, but I would like to say something about the comments made against rap music. There are few rap/hip-hop acts who are extremely talented and never get much radio play (namely Jurassic 5 and the Roots). Hell, I'll even admit I enjoyed 50 Cent's album (1 of my top 5 albums of '03). I'll admit there is a bit of crap out there on the airwaves now, but rap is just like any other flavor of music, it has the great, the mediocre, and the just plain awful.
Now, back to subject... I find it amusing that TP was rejected *ALLEGEDLY* by different networks for ID, consideing they made all the edits to the series for thta sole reason. After I watched the original subtitled version, I am still wondering why the hell would you want to change the music? IT just worked so perfectly. And I'll admit I'm nott too big of a fan of J-pop, but the beginning and opening tracks are fantastic.
Well, I'd say more about the joke that is the "Tricked Out" edition, but I think I've said enogh in a previous thread.

Well first of all the chances of the tricked out version getting on T.V are how shall we put this slim to none. They tried to make it t.v acceptable but they failed miserably. One of the biggest problems with this tricked out dub is that the language attitude and dialogue are on a level way less mature then what would be needed for networks like MTV or Speed Channel to pick it up. Simply the people that would have watched this show won't watch it with all this fake added slang and crap like that also the changes to the video is just really crappy as well. Tokyopop has shot themselves in the foot with this initial d dub and with the crap they are doing to the initial d manga. They should have just translated Initial D and left it at that. Thank god for fansubs and people that hate tokyopops butchering of this show and making it available uncut.

I don't see the similarity between rap and car racing. It just doesn't fit.
