I think I've only heard of him and his series a little bit. What a fascinating and inspiring person though, and I can relate to those sentiments. (Not specifically/necessarily for Japan, but for other places too.)

I'll have to sit down and watch the whole interview, nd try to watch Toco Toco more.

I've long wished someone would pick up Stop!! Hibari-kun for a US release, even if its just streamed with subtitles. Discotek, are you reading this?

I understand the lamentation of the concept, Stop! Hibari kun had a combination of outlandish concepts for its time, a son of a Yakuza boss that is the lead girl in series.

Had the series continued with animated series content Hibari Kun would have probably ended up in the west before Ranma 1/2 in regards to the outlandish comedy niche.

To return the article, in particular with Hibari kun the Yakuza is no longer in social relevance in modern times as it was in the 80s and Otokonoko are dime a dozen in comedy series that it cannot raise eye brows as a concept and more significantly there hasn't been effectively a love comedy where the Otokonoko is leaned on to be the main love interest.


The point of the matter is that content such as girls-that-are-born-boys has lost its uniqueness in mass media, most mainstream published content plays it safe with the invisible play book for writing manga/LN and we end up in an ocean of content that reflects the creators of content (at least those that are allowed to publish) have effectively a hive mind.

Real issue w/ the show is it'd be perceived as transphobic here, by today's standards. So, they'd have to be able to put a warning on it. They *did* briefly publish the manga here on FB, though.
