I don't think it should be to hard to follow most of Baki is a fighting tournament. All you need to know is Baki made some friends fighting and his Father is an insane narcissistic psychopath.

More or less what Brand said to be honest lol. The characters' backgrounds and the story aren't massively important, and past viewers could easily whip up a short rundown of the principle cast if the anime doesn't give new viewers a recap. Really, the entire manga is a vehicle for the nuttiest of fights, and this arc's probably the highlight of the series.
