Geez. Such a small joke. If there's anyone who takes patriotism quite as seriously as the diehard USA lovers, it's diehard Japan lovers. Confused

Quote:
Oda's remarks appear to reference Shōichi Yokoi, a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. He was one of the army's last holdouts after the war ended in 1945, and he was discovered living in the jungles of Guam in 1972. After returning to Japan, he famously said, "It is with much embarrassment that I return."
That was a parody of that in Miss Machiko

I'd say Japan is even more full of nationalist nutjobs than the US, but, well, the past few years and all. Either way that's the most innocuous excuse for a "controversy" I've ever seen, especially when you've had other manga authors being pedophiles and racist scumbags recently.

Okay great, we're just gonna get angry and pedantic about fricken everything now.

I hate this new outrage culture the world is so wrapped up in, if your joke isn't the most sterile desensitization thing ever it's rude and you should feel bad.

Indeed, this is quite the “controversy”. Time to cancel One Piece folks.

And it WAS funny.

Come on Japan. Don't go the western way, apologizing for every little thing and be afraid say anything because it can be offensive for some people.

Tell the people offended to get over it.
If i read or watch something i find offensive, i just ignore it and go read and watch something else.

Not being Japanese I wouldn't feel as strongly about this as some people, it seems like a mildly tasteless joke made amongst friends. The main issue I see with this is that he decided to share that anecdote and mildly tasteless joke as an aside in his manga and then encouraged kids to "look it up". There's a difference between making a crude joke with your friends and using your public platform to share that joke.

Though I do find it funny that people are criticising those who criticised him and accused them of trying to stifle freedom of speech through their criticism when they're doing the exact same thing. Everyone always seems to act like freedom of speech only applies to things they agree with, just as he's free to say what he wants other people are free to express their disagreement with what he's said, so many people fail to understand that.

Though this has reminded me of something that I've often thought, nothing offends people more than other people being offended.

Part of me is worried this will get One Piece canceled...

But my more rational side isn't because if it does get canceled it won't be a while because the only way that would happen is if One Piece isn't profitable anymore... and I don't think that would happen instantly.

It’s not funny but it wasn’t that offensive either.

If OP ever gents cancelled due to something like that, people would certainly protest. They'd probably just let it go and forget it, the same way they forgot Toriko's author's past offenses.
