Funimation would likely handle any Akira theatrical re-release.
They announced they're working on getting the 4K Blu ray release license.
It may be another year before we see the 4K BD release because of the traditional six-month quarantine period between Japanese and US hi-def home video releases. The US release is dependent on the Japanese home video. Tack on 6 months AFTER Japan gets is 4K BD and that's when the US 4K BD release will happen -- MINIMUM. It could be longer than that.
It would be this way regardless of "current situations" in the world.
In other words, they just don't want Japanese fans importing US discs because of the huge cost disparities. The American release will be at least 40% cheaper if not 50%-60% less than Japanese retail. It's been that way for as long as I've been collecting regardless of the format... You can rarely get a Japanese BD for under $45. $60 is more common for anime releases unless they're budget editions and those are few and far between.

I take it that the COVID-19 situation in Japan is improving. That's obviously my hope.
