I never realized this until now but is there an age limit to anime? I have been watching anime for almost have my life now and I still find anime that appeal to me but at a lower rate. A few years back I was still watching everything that was coming out but now I am more selective and I find fewer anime series to be worth my time. I find maturer plots like Black Lagoon or Ghost in the Shell to be more my thing and I often forget about new episodes of Bleach or Naruto Shippuden, that I would have never done before. So really my question is whether at one point I will completley lose interest in anime or will the mature plot theme become profitable enough for animators to make into a long term staple for the maturing anime generation?

Anime is no different from movies and T.V. in terms of maximum age. There are plenty of kid shows on T.V. too.

There are plenty of non-Shoujo/Shonen anime out there, which is technically for teenagers. I think most of the anime on ANN's top 100 list are not so kid-like that an adult watching them would be bored.

It's true that anime is no different then a normal T.V. show however the animation factor makes it more suitable to a younger viewers because that is usually the first kind of show they are introduced to as kids. As a result kids and teens become the staple of the animators' profits and the mature 18+ genre gets less attention because anime viewer's tastes are expeced to mature to other mediums. This is proven by the fact that there are far less mature 18+ anime out there. Thus it seems that animators aren't too worried about keeping up with the older fans... Hence my dilemma, whether or not anime will be able to keep my attention in the future...

well... that sucks. I guess you will have to see?

What exactly are we supposed to discuss? The fact that sometime in the future you may give up on watching anime? Well, that happens for any hobby. You may lose interest and if that happens then you can happily move on, as long as you don't forget the shows.. then it was worth it. Very Happy

I suggest manga if you're running low on mature plots. There's a whole lot of seinen manga that aren't adapted into anime (obviously because more money is in adapting the shounen shit). But if manga really isn't your thing then just try not to get too paranoid about growing out of anime, if you ever do get fed up with it I'm absolutely positive you're not going to care at all about being angry with yourself for quitting.

Well if you really want something to discuss then how about whether or not the mature 18+ crowd should be targeted by animators or is it really that unprofitable for them...

When I read the title of this thread, I was expecting a different opening post. I thought you were going to describe how society looks down on older watchers of Anime, where as you were describing how the production companies are the ones responsible.

I think people of all ages can enjoy Anime, whether they are two, sixteen or over eighty. You just need to find the right Anime for your tastes. However, it is almost disheartening that for every intelligent series like Zipang, there are many that are aimed squarely at the under-ten market.

However, the general Japanese population is aging rapidly. With it, the age of the average Anime fan. So, I think that more mature Anime will be released as a proportion, simply to keep pace with this older and more discerning viewer.

That is my take on the situation, anyway.

[Edited to make more sense.]

I really appreciate the suggestion, even though manga has never been my thing I will look into it, since I'm also finding less time for T.V. and the internet medium.
But I think most are misunderstanding the subject of the discussion "How old is too old to still be watching anime?" and thinking this is about me. What I'm really curious about is how old is too old for the animators? Obviously there is a target demographic for anime but is there also an age limit imposed by animators? This might seem like a stupid question, I mean if you are 60 you probably won't be the target demographic of animators any time in the near future, but in my opinion animators are missing out on profits by not expanding more into the 20-30 age group. Anime is a very flexible medium that can be attractive to all age groups and inspire the same emotions as big screen movies, t.v. dramas, etc. I just believe that there isn't enough of this expansion into this age group. Am I wrong or clairvoyant?

I completely agree... but I think its not happening at a rapid enough pace and long time fans like myself are starting to loose interest.

There are plenty of Anime that aims for a mature market. I just recently watched Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, and that has wide appeal to everyone aged over sixteen.

When an Anime is made, I would think they would not make it for the 30-34 demographic, or the 55-59 demographic. As far as I can tell, there are children's Anime, mature Anime, mix of both, hentai, and finally Anime that has near-universal appeal (like the Ghibli films).

In answer to your question, there isn't the same social stigma in Japan for watching Anime or reading manga, so Anime is often made incorporating very childish elements and very mature elements. The boundaries between genres is also more blurred. All to appeal across the widest range of viewers as possible, both adults and young teens. Take Elfen Lied. Ultraviolent, yet with a (at first) quirky romantic subplot. Full Metal Panic is another Jeckyl-and-Hide series.

So if you are having trouble finding any Anime that is aimed squarely at a mature audience, it is not because the director hates older folk. They are simply bound by the need to appeal to a wide audience.

I think I've seen same topic about this one.

Anyways I think as long as you like watching anime there is no age limit. And in my opinion as people age, their taste gradually changes. Same happens to me too. I use to like fantasy and adventure genre, but this days I find them boring and unappealing. Now I'm interested in Slice-of-Life, Romance and a few Comedy once in a while.

But yeah no age limit, but taste changes because people mature.

The social stigma in Japan? I''ll take your word for it since you seem to have more insight into the culture. So if they are bound by their need to appeal to a wider audience are they alienating the older fans and hence loosing out on profits?

I was too old to be watching anime 8 years ago when I was 13. And apparently I'm still to old now. Most people think cartoons and think youngsters but they don't realize that anime is normal TV in Japan.

Erm says who? Duckman, South Park, Family Guy. Amongst others, these are all adult oriented animated shows. I dont see how animation automatically indicates childishness. There are plenty of examples of anime that deal with mature themes, and so I dont feel theres any age where you should stop watching anime, or feel like youre clinging to a childish pastime.

for me i grew out of the shouen types, like Bleach, Naruto, D.Grey man. when i was young it was mainly Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z and abit of Pokemon (altho i guess i was too old when that came out). i know find myself going after the more mature (doesnt have to be 18+). look at Spice and Wolf, i absolutely love that anime yet it wouldnt appeal to kids nor young teens (way to economical).

i also have friends that have just started watching anime and they are the same age as me and love Bleach and/or Naruto. i guess i kinda got that outta my system along time ago and became kinda jaded, or just got tired of that type of storyline.
